What’s New/What Is It The one word that comes to mind when think about of contemporary Philippine music is the type commonly termed as Original Pinoy Music or Original Philippine Music, or OPM for short. It was originally used to refer only to Philippine pop songs, particularly ballads, such as those popular after the collapse of its predecessor, the Manila Sound, in the late 1970s up until the present. 3 ORIGINAL PINOY MUSIC (OPM) Compositions made use of Western-type melody and harmony, while expressing uniquely Filipino emotions in movingly poetic lyrics. These came to be known as OPM and were popularized by some solo artists. During 1980s where it was regarded as the Golden Era of Philippine Ballad and artist came to be known. Among the famous names in the OPM music were Ryan Cayabyab who is known as the “greatest composer of OPM”. It started with Bobby Gonzales’ “Hahabol-habol” (HotPursuit), a local version of the rock and roll songs of the1950s, and Rico Puno’s “Luneta”, a local adaptation of “The Way We Were.” The start of the “Manila Sound” in the mid-1970s gave rise to https://cutt.ly/qjaZmi0 songs using a colloquial language called Taglish, a combination of Tagalog and English. These Filipino lyrics sung to pop melodies resulted in highly singable songs with contemporary appeal. What’s In In the previous lesson, we have learned the characteristics of Original Pilipino Music, how it influences the lives and the culture of the Filipino people. We have heard some examples of their songs and seen how they create their music, as they express their feelings and moods. Music plays a vital part of understanding the history and people of Philippines. Filipinos adopted western music and later able to develop their own genres. Like other Pinoy musicians who are inspired by jazz music and later, created own jazz songs. What’s New/What Is It Jazz is a music genre that originated in African- American communities. The distinctive elements of jazz include characteristics rhythm patterns, harmonic practices, functional harmony, and the practice of improvisation. Among them are jazz pianist and recording artist Boy Katindig, who comes from the well-known clan of musicians that includes jazz piano legend Romy Katindig and saxophonist Eddie Katindig. What’s In In the previous lesson, we you learned how Philippine jazz musician was inspired and how jazz music in the Philippines was influenced by Africans. This time, we will talk about musical characteristics of Philippine Folk and Rock music. This is another interesting music form which was different from the traditional and popular form that they consider as other way of expressing emotions. What’s New/What Is It Alternative Folk Music, a combination ethnic of instrumentation with electronic accompaniment, while presenting themes or issues of society and the environment. It often retains its more traditional root combined with acoustic sound. Folk Music Artist https://cutt.ly/djaZa6I Freddie Aguilar - Filipino composers whose styles ranged from folk to semi- ethnic best known for his song “Anak”. The song was translated into 26 languages. Yoyoy Villame – a Visayan singer and composer of the song “Magellan, Philippine History “and many more. Florante – Singer-song writer Florante de Leon is also a great guitarist and famous for his song “Ako’y Isang Pinoy.” Garry Granada – is a well- kown Filipino musician, composer, poet, and known for writing song with strong political theme. He wrote the song Ka “Bayani.” Some of the Filipino composers who championed this style were Joey Ayala, Grace Nono, and Edru Abraham of Kontragapi (“Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino”). 8 Philippine Rock The year 1973 saw the birth of Philippine or the rock beat with Filipino lyrics. This new sound was introduced by the legendary Juan de la Cruz Band (with their song Ang Himig Natin) which had for its members Joey “Pepe” Smith, Wally Gonzales, and the originator of Jeproks, Mike Hanopol, who later became a major symbol of Pinoy rock. When it was released in the Philippines, it appeared in different languages. Rap songs always have a rhythmic beat, with steady strong beat which makes it more popular in bars. In the Philippines, rap was also made popular by such composers and performers as Francis Magalona (“Mga Kababayan Ko” and “Watawat”) and Andrew E (“Humanap Ka ng Pangit”) Rap Icon in the Philippines A. Francis Magalona Francis Magalona was born on October 4, 1964 and died on March 6, 2009. He is also known as FrancisM, “Master Rapper,” and “The Man from Manila.” He was a Filipino rapper, songwriter, producer, actor, director, television host, and photographer. He is often hailed as the “King of Pinoy Rap” and is considered a legend in the Philippine music community. 10 B. Andrew E. is a Filipino rapper, record producer and actor. He is best known throughout the Philippines for his 1990 debut hit single "Humanap Ka Ng Panget" (Look For Someone Ugly). Espiritu won a 'Rap Album of the Year' award for his latest album Clubzilla at the 2010 PMPC Star Awards for Music. C. Gloc 9 is a Filipino rapper, singer and songwriter. Regarded as one of the best Filipino rappers of all-time, his fast-flowing vocal style has made him one of the most successful hip-hop artists in the Philippines.
