Respiratory system Bones of the thoracic wall (Lab 5) BY Dr. Marwa Al-Gholam 1. Describe the components of the thoracic cage 2. Identify sternum structures. 3. List parts of the sternum. 4. Classify ribs 5. Identify structures of ribs 6. Identify the costal groove and its contents 7. Classify thoracic vertebrae 8. Identify structures of the thoracic vertebrae. Thoracic cage It consists of 1- Sternum 2-12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilage 3-12 thoracic vertebrae (T1– T12). The thoracic cage protects the heart and lungs. Typical Ribs The Ribs 3rd to 9th have similar features and are called TYPICAL RIBS It consists of: Three parts : 1. A curved shaft with anterior and posterior ends. 2. Anterior end is continuous with its costal cartilage. 3. Posterior end articulates with the vertebral column and is characterized by a head, neck, and tubercle. Neck Head Superior facet Angle Inferior facet Articular facet Tubercle Costal groove Vein Artery Nerve Second rib Outer border First rib Inner border Thoracic vertebrae Vertebral body is heart shaped. Presence of demi-facets on the sides of each vertebral body – these articulate with the heads of the ribs. Presence of costal facets on the transverse processes – these articulate with the tubercles of the ribs. They are present on T1-T10 only. The spinous processes are long and slant inferiorly. Typical vertebrae T2-T8 Vertebral foramen Facet for costo- vertebral joint Spine Facet for costo- Body Transverse transverse joint process T1 Atypical vertebrae T11 T12 Identify the marked parts Name the marked joints 2 1 4 3 Identify the marked parts Lis contents of the marked groove 5 5
