Unit 5: Muscular System Handout By: Crede, Tyler, and Mahika | 10/24/2024 Types of Muscle Tissue Skeletal Cardiac Smooth Voluntary contractions Involuntary contractions Involuntary contractions Attached to bones Intercalated disks Spindle-shaped cells Striated Striated Not striated Control voluntary movement (running) Control heartbeat Found in digestive system or blood vessels Skeletal Muscle Basics Muscles are connected to bones by tendons As muscles utilize ATP for muscle contraction, heat is produced Sarcomere is the primary unit responsible for muscle contractions in skeletal muscles ○ It is made up by two proteins, Actin formed by thin myofilaments and Myosin formed by thick myofilaments ○ When Actin and Myosin move past each other in the sarcomere, a muscle contraction occurs The neuromuscular junction connects directly to the nervous system in which it transmits signals via a motor neuron to the muscle fiber Muscle Structure Muscle Contraction Red Muscle Type I: Aerobic slow fibers ○ Endurance Activities Type II-A: Aerobic and Anaerobic fast fibers ○ Speed and Endurance Activities White Muscle Type II-B: Anaerobic fast fibers ○ Speed Activities
