Department of Basic Medical Sciences NEUROANATOMY Cerebellum Department of Basic Medical Sciences Metencephalic derivative Located in the posterior cranial fossa, posterior to the pons and medulla, and inferior to the tentorium cerebelli Functions in the co-ordination of voluntary movements, maintenance of balance and equilibrium and posture External features include: Superior convex surface Inferior surface with a deep median notch viz vallecula Department of Basic Medical Sciences Consists of 2 hemispheres connected by the midline vermis Can be subdivided in 3 ways viz.: anatomical lobes zones functional lobes Each hemisphere is divided into 3 anatomical lobes Anterior lobe – on superior surface, anterior to primary fissure Posterior lobe – extends from primary fissure to the posterolateral fissure (on inferior surface) Department of Basic Medical Sciences Flocculonodular lobe Consists internally of: Outer layer of grey matter – cerebellar cortex inner layer of white matter and 4 nuclei viz. Department of Basic Medical Sciences FUNCTIONALLY consists of 3 parts viz.: Archicerebellum – oldest part phyologenetically function primarily in balance and equilibrium Paleocerebellum function in muscle tone and posture Neocerebellum – most of cerebellar hemispheres function in co-ordination of voluntary movement https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdoctorlib.info%2Fanatomy%2Fneuroanatomy-illustrated- colour- text%2F11.html&psig=AOvVaw3F3YBK58n84cQ53NZvePEA&ust=1692348325884000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89 978449&ved=0CBIQjhxqFwoTCMC86fim44ADFQAAAAAdAAAAABBZ Department of Basic Medical Sciences VASCULATURE OF THE CEREBELLUM Receives blood from 3 pairs of arteries viz.: ❑ Superior cerebellar arteries Basilar artery ❑ Anterior inferior cerebellar arteries ❑ Posterior inferior cerebellar arteries vertebral artery Drained via the superior and inferior cerebellar veins which enter the dural venous sinuses via the superior petrosal, transverse and straight sinuses Department of Basic Medical Sciences E A B C D
