COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE Collaborative Practice: What is it? “Collaborative practice in health care occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, [caregivers,] and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings.” COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE History of Collaborative Practice in Dentistry • Historically, dentistry has been very isolated from medicine. • • • • 1995: Alerted that greater collaboration was needed between medicine and dentistry 2006: Academic leaders saw dental schools as isolated from interprofessional education. The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) promoted an accreditation standard stating dental graduates “must be competent in communicating and collaborating with other members of the health care team to facilitate the provision of health care”. • • Continues to shape dental practices today Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) adopted the standard. 2014: 90% of dental schools offered IPE experiences, 69% of those activities were required.
