Central Maintenance SubSystem - Description & Operations 1.1 Central Maintenance SubSystem - Description 1.1.1 General Description General Description CMS Architecture The Central Maintenance System (CMS) main component is a software application called CMS Application. The CMS Application is redundant, and resides in both Integrated Network Server Units (INSUs), which are part of the Network Server System (NSS). The CMS applications use the basic shared services offered by the NSS: - Shared Database, which is used by the CMS to store maintenance information - NSS Human Machine Interface (HMI), which are the Printer and the Aircraft Multipurpose Access Terminal (AMAT) - INSUs connections to Portable Multipurpose Access Terminal (PMAT) - Secure communications with the aircraft systems. The information coming from the avionics are BITE messages sent by the Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) and Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs). The CMS transmits BITE requests to the aircraft LRUs and LRMs in order to initiate interactive tests when required by the operator. In addition, the CMS acquires operational data: - Failure messages and Flight Deck Effects from the Flight Warning System (FWS), Control Display System (CDS) and Head Up Display System (HUDS) - Aircraft parameters from other systems When the aircraft is on ground, the CMS application can be accessed and controlled from the Maintenance Access Terminals (AMAT and PMAT). Aircraft system failure reports can be generated by various CMS pages, the operator has the option to view the report on the MAT screen or print the applicable report. The CMS acquires fault symptoms from the aircraft systems and in particular from BITEs of the Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) and the Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs) or aircraft wiring being the cause of the failure. There are two modes of communications between BITEs and CMS: - The Normal Mode (on ground and in flight) is a one way reporting transmission from BITE to CMS. In normal mode, the CMS: - Does system continuous monitoring. - Detects and identifies failures. - Centralizes failure events and parameters sent by the BITEs. - The Interactive mode (only on ground) is a duplex communication between BITE and CMS for testing and specific BITE data access. The interactive mode gives access to: - Interactive system tests. - Systems monitoring. - Maintenance history. NTCSS Release 2023-01 47_ATA45_Lv2&3_CAT B2_P_JUN20.pdf A400M Training Manual Central Maintenance SubSystem - Description & Operations Detailed Description BITE, Operational Effects and Post Flight Report Correlation (I) A/C systems fault detection is achieved by an internal monitoring and test function which resides in all systems. The monitoring function of A/C equipment sends the fault information to the Flight Warning System (FWS) and also to other A/C Systems as CDS, HUD or IPCS if the fault causes a Flight Deck Effect (FDE). These systems (FWS, CDS, HUD, ICPS...) use the fault information to determine and generate the related alerts to be displayed as Operational Effects on the Cockpit and LMWS systems. Also, all faults detected by the A/C system internal monitoring and test functions are acquired by its internal BITE. The system BITE processes the fault information to elaborate and transmit BITE Failure messages or Maintenance Fault messages to the CMS. The Operational Effects information (FDE information, Fault Message, Time remaining...) is also sent continuously from the FWS, CDS, and HUD to the CMS at regular intervals. The CMS makes a link and a correlation with the Operational Effects and the BITE Fault Messages or Maintenance Fault Messages in order to determine a related fault case. This link is provided by the Post Flight Report generated by the CMS. The BITE is a fault isolation and reporting function only for On-Board maintenance purposes, not for fault detection. Fault detection is done by system monitoring within each system and test functions. It means that BITE function failure messages do not provide info to the flight crew and are not necessary for operational purpose. The BITE function failure messages are dedicated to maintenance technicians or engineers to support the diagnostic trouble shooting actions. NTCSS Release 2023-01 47_ATA45_Lv2&3_CAT B2_P_JUN20.pdf A400M Training Manual Central Maintenance SubSystem - Description & Operations Detailed Description Fault Case Definition During the flight, the CMS receives all symptoms related to systems failures. A failure may lead to secondary malfunctions on other systems. The CMS correlates all those symptoms caused by the same original failure and gathers them in a structured common item called “Fault Case”. Fault cases mainly contain FMs and FDEs but also contextual data such as flight phase. Each Fault case is characterized by a main Failure Message (fault origin) and a main Flight Deck Effect associated to the primary failure. Then “Post Flight Report items”, which contains one fault case, are created. Besides, as much as possible, a unique fault origin associated to this PFR Item will be determined. NTCSS Release 2023-01 47_ATA45_Lv2&3_CAT B2_P_JUN20.pdf A400M Training Manual Central Maintenance SubSystem - Description & Operations Detailed Description PFR Data Recording During a Flight A leg is the period of time that contains a Maintenance Phase and a Flight. The Flight condition is determined between start-up of the third engine plus 3 minutes, with flight plan available in the Flight Management System (FMS), and 50 knots and 150 seconds after touch down. During the flight, the Post Flight Report records maintenance and operational data received by the CMS. The Post Flight Report correlation is launched at the end of the last leg. Thus, the Post Flight Report treats Failure Messages and Flight Deck Effects that have been present during at least a part of this leg. The failure messages generated during the Maintenance Phase are managed by a different function, the Ground Report. It starts after the Post Flight Report closure. Data Loading & Configuration SubSystem - Description & Operations 2.1 Data Loading & Configuration SubSystem - Description 2.1.1 General Description General Description DLCS Architecture The Data Loading and Configuration System (DLCS) main component is a software application called DLCS Application. The DLCS Application is redundant, and resides in both INSUs. The DLCS applications use the basic shared services offered by the NSS: - The Printer and AMAT - INSUs connections to PMAT - Secure communications with the aircraft systems. The AMAT and PMAT are used as media readers and writers. Also, the PMAT Hard Discs can be used for storing downloaded data. The DLCS allows software and data base loading from various media sources to aircraft computers and vice versa. There are two types of targets: - Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) - Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs) The DLCS receives configuration data to allow the generation of aircraft and equipment configuration reports. The Software Pin Programming (SPP) Function is used for the storage and the distribution of SPP loads, which determine the configuration of many aircraft systems. The SPP loads are broadcasted cyclically to the aircraft LRUs and LRMs. The SPP loads are uploaded using the DLCS. At operator request, the DLCS can read the broadcasted SPP, and display this information on any Maintenance Access Terminal.
