Positive Psychology and Communication Skills Week 4 Positive psychology practices “emotional intelligence in adults, children and youth, marriage and business life” 1 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional intelligence be an activist see the positive to be hopeful Internal and external motivation Optimism believing and trusting people Being brave Being humorous and funny be able to make empathy have aesthetic values to be embracing have self-confidence 2 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional intelligence Emotional intelligence (EQ) was first used in 1990 by psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer. 3 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Daniel Goleman, in his book Emotional Intelligence published in 1995, defines emotional intelligence as "the ability to understand one's own emotions, to empathize with the emotions of others, and to regulate emotions in a way that enriches life" (Goleman, 1998).» 4 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGQQ7pJQqHk 5 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL In reality, these are the forces that we always use for the struggle for human life; Scientists now see EQ as a learnable intelligence that can be developed and improved at any time and at any age. Emotional intelligence is vital to reasoning and IQ, and people who know how to use emotional powers properly have made every area of their life easier for them. 6 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL The person who uses his emotional power recognizes his feelings, accepts them and expresses them appropriately. In addition, he is more successful in interpersonal communication because he can identify and recognize his own emotion, that is, because he has a high level of awareness, he can understand the feelings of others and put himself in someone else's place. However, being aware of the people around him and his own feelings increases the person's potential to overcome the problems encountered in daily life. 7 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Research shows that intelligence has little effect on individuals' directing their lives, being happy and successful. One of the main reasons for this is that the ability to think is limited to intelligence and that desire and motivation are a product of emotional intelligence (Taşkın, 2008, p.11). Is IQ brings success in business– or EQ bring success??? 8 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL While IQ brings success between 1% and 20% in business success, business success is between 27% and 45% in people with high EQ (Book and Stein, 2003, p. 32). 9 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL According to Goleman (1996), IQ and emotional intelligence are not opposite, but separate types of intelligence. In fact, there is a slight connection between IQ and some aspects of emotional intelligence. However, there is much evidence to show that these two types of intelligence are independent of each other. 10 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL The most important evidence suggesting that IQ and EQ are separate intelligence types are studies that reveal that there is no significant relationship between academic achievement, IQ score or university entrance exam scores and being successful in life. 11 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL For example, in a study (Vaillant 1977) in which 95 Harvard graduates were followed into their middle years, it was found that students with the highest grades in school exams were not more successful in terms of salary, productivity, and position in their field than their peers with lower grades. It was also revealed that the group with lower grades were more satisfied with their lives and happier with friends, family and love relationships. 12 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional intelligence is based on the indispensability of human emotions, not the decline of logic. EQ is not a concept related to either making sales tricks or putting smiling faces on objects, nor is it a concept related to the psychology of use or orientation for control and profit (Kılıçarslan, 2009, p.10). Also, emotional intelligence doesn't mean "emptying" feelings. On the contrary, it means ensuring that people work in unity and harmony towards their common goals by managing their feelings in a way that is appropriate and effective (Goleman, 1998, p.13). 13 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional Intelligence in Adults Infancy ------ childhood ------ adolescence/young adulthood ------ adulthood Adulthood is the period of maturity. It is the ability to deal with differences. Dr. Daniel Goleman has gathered emotional intelligence under 5 titles. We will be covering 10 main topics. 14 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL 10 steps to emotional intelligence Self-knowledge and awareness Recognition and empathy for others Communication skills Ability to say "no" Motivation and future planning problem solving skills Anger, stress and time management forgiveness and tolerance perseverance Charity and cooperation compromise 15 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional intelligence in children and adolescents It is based on personality traits or what is known as character rather than the traits that make up a child's mental/mental capacity. Research shows that social and emotional skills are much more important than mental/mental abilities for success in life. 16 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Emotional intelligence in children and adolescents The term emotional intelligence was first used in 1990 by Harvard University psychologist Peter Salovey and the University of New Hampshire John Meyere. The term is used to describe the emotional qualities that are important for success.» Empathy Expressing and expressing emotions control your temperament Independence to be able to adapt solving interpersonal problems Persistence Compassion Kindness 17 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Setting limits/rules on children Instilling a sense of responsibility in children starts with the simple rules we set. Parenting that ignores emotions Highly liberating parenting Parenting that humiliates the child and does not respect their feelings Parenting that teaches the child emotionally 18 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL The primary school of emotional intelligence is family. The behavior of the parents creates deep and lasting effects on the emotional life of the child. Parents who do not care about children's feelings and do not respond to their emotional needs thus prevent their mental development as well as their emotional intelligence (Taşkın, 2008, p. 18). 19 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL not being able to say "no" It is the biggest obstacle to raising a child with high emotional intelligence. Setting boundaries for children is not as easy as it seems. It is necessary to set simple rules for children in order to develop a sense of responsibility. - such as eating, bedtime, computer use time, TV watching time Children want to push the limits set and they try. In these cases, the attitudes of the parents contribute positively or negatively to the formation of the child's personality. 20 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL The task of the parent is to model the child's ability to set boundaries, motivate himself, stop himself, and control and delay impulses. The role and place of parents is very important. The age, education level and mental and emotional capacity of the primary caregiver directly affect the child. Parent's use of common language and parenting styles are also among the determinants. 21 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL child's ability to set boundaries, motivate himself, stop himself, and control and delay impulses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi8jqjo8sV8 22 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL insufficient parenting styles Parenting that ignores emotions Highly liberating parenting Parenting that humiliates and disrespects the child's feelings Emotionally highly mentoring parenting 23 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL 7 key elements of learning Trust Curiosity aiming self-control Ability to relate communication ability Ability to collaborate 24 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL 5 basics of EQ self consciousness Ability to manage emotions personal motivation Empathy social skills 25 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL Adolescence is a turbulent period. In childhood, the principles of emotional intelligence were acquired and its foundations were laid. The biggest difference of EQ from IQ is that it is more open to improvement. Although 50% of them are innate, they are learnable skills. 26 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL emotional intelligence in marriage In order to manage relationships in a healthy way, it is important that we know ourselves, the other person and what is going on in the relationship process. What will the division of labor be like? What will be the borders and individual freedom areas between spouses? How will the approach to children be? How to set the budget…etc. 27 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL The fact that individuals have emotional intelligence in marriages enables individuals to act independently while being "us". On the one hand, individuals are independent and on the other hand, they establish close emotional bonds with eachother and social life and enjoy it, on the other hand, they believe in themselves, know their responsibilities and make their own decisions. 28 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL ın relationship / marriage; Emotional sharing Expression of mutual feelings understanding each other Open communication is essential for a fulfilling marriage. These are also elements of emotional intelligence. The adequacy of emotional intelligence between spouses and the degree to which they can show this competence to each other determine the quality of marriage. 29 HİZMETE ÖZEL - INTERNAL EQ enhanced couples in the face of problems - have an active attitude and try to solve the problem They can empathize They can express their expectations by being aware of their needs.
