Section 5 Household measures Calculation of doses Syrups Household measures Household measures Example: A cough syrup is prescribed in ½ teaspoonful doses for a child. How many doses are contained in a 3 fl℥ bottle ? Answer: 1 fl℥ 30 ml 3 fl℥ X X = 3 * 30 = 90 ml ½ teaspoonful = ½ * 5 = 2.5 ml 1 dose 2.5 ml X 90 ml X = 36 doses Calculations of doses Calculations of doses Doses for children are calculated using the child body wt. The dose is usually in mg/ kg. Without these data ,we calculate the child dose in relation to the adult dose. Calculations of doses for children 1)Young`s rule:based on age In years Age Dose for child = × adult dose Age+12 Example: If the usual adult dose= 15 mg what is the dose for a child 8 years old? 2)Freid`s rule of infants: (1.313 𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑦𝑟𝑢𝑝)/"1 ml of syrup" b) wt of syrup = 70 ml of syrup x (1.313 𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑦𝑟𝑢𝑝)/"1 ml of syrup" = 91.91 g of syrup c)Wt of water = 91.91 - 59.5 = 32.41 g = 32.41 ml LABEL: Sig: 5 ml q 3-4 h prn for cough The Cough Syrup One teaspoonful to be taken every three to four hours when needed for cough Artificial syrups ,Non Nutritive Syrups: For patients suffering from diabetes the formula must be sugar free 1)Saccharin: It is 300 to 400 sweet as sucrose but it has bitter after taste. SUGAR SUBSTITUENTS: 2)Cyclamate: It combine the advantage of sweet 1)Glycerin taste but with no bitter after taste 2)Sorbitol 3)Saccharin and Cyclamate Diabetic Cough syrup: Ammonium chloride Potassium iodide aa 0.2 g Codeine phosphate 0.18 g Saccharin 0.018 g (artificial sweetener) Aqua 10 ml Methyl cellulose solution ad 60 ml (viscosity builder) Fiat : Syrup Sig: 5 ml q 3_4 h prn for cough Calculation: Factor = 1 Amount of vehicle =60-10=50ml LABEL: Sig: 5 ml q 3_4 h prn for cough The Diabetic Cough Syrup One teaspoonful to be taken every three to four hours when needed for cough Tools Spatula Mortar and glass rod pestle 250 ml beaker 50 ml cylinder 100 ml cylinder 10 ml cylinder Funnel Filter papers Bottle Amber bottle Labels Transparent Dropper bottle cotton/ Gauze 10 ml beaker Thank you!
