^ Chapter 1 ' Legislation and Codes for Power Engineers OBJECTIVE 3 Explain the adoption of codes and standards by Jurisdiction in Canada and identify the main standards that have been adopted with respect to boilers and pressure equipment. ADOPTION OF CODES AND STANDARDS Each of the provinces and territories in Canada has established laws, rules, and regulations relating to the construction, installation, inspection, and operation of boilers and pressure vessels to ensure public safety. Various codes and standards have been used in the development of these laws, rules, and regulations. As mentioned earlier in this chapter, codes and standards must be adopted by a jurisdiction in order to be enforceable. If there is a newer version of a code or standard that has not been declared in force, the older version of the code or standard is the current, enforceable version. The following is a list of codes, rules, and standards that are referenced by provinces and territories in Canada. Although many of these have been adopted by all Canadian jurisdictions, there are some differences, so you will need to consult the list of adopted codes and standards stated in the act and regulations for your specific jurisdiction. This list will state whether all or part of the code has been adopted and if the appendix is to be considered mandatory. Your jurisdictional regulations will also inform you as to the current edition of the adopted code.
