Mr Joey 3.4 Moving from hot to cold Recap Heat = the total energy of all particles in an object Temperature = the average energy of particles in an object 9/20/2024 2 Heat (thermal energy) flows from areas or objects of high temperature to low temperature The flow continues until the temperature becomes equal When that happens, we say thermal equilibrium is achieved Flow of heat 9/20/2024 3 Rate of heat flow Rate = how fast something happens The greater the difference in temperature between the hot and cold areas/objects, the faster heat will flow E.g. A hot coffee becomes cold (lose heat to surroundings) much faster in a cold room compared to being in a hot room 9/20/2024 4 Feeling hot & cold When we touch a hot object, heat flows into our hands When we touch a cold object, heat flows out from our hands We have special cells in our skin to detect if heat is transferred to and from our body 9/20/2024 5 Heat dissipation Room temperature = temperature of surroundings If an object is hotter than the room temperature, heat will gradually dissipate from that object to the surroundings Dissipation occurs until the object reaches room temperature That is, thermal equilibrium is reached 9/20/2024 6
