Fresno City Fire Department 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 309.006 DEWALT BATTERY POWERED CHAINSAW PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to provide instruction to Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) members on the proper use and maintenance of the DeWalt, battery powered chainsaw. APPLICATION The DeWalt chainsaw is intended for use during emergency operations to remove wood covered windows and/or doors, wooden fencing, railings, in addition to appropriate overhaul operations. OPERATIONAL POLICY To reduce the risk of serious personal injury while operating the chainsaw, all Department members shall wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to include full turnouts, helmet with eye protection, and gloves. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Members should not cut materials with their body “in line” with the guide bar. This may cause injury from the saw/debris or if “kickback” occurs. Due to the speed of the chain when operating, neither chaps nor turnouts can stop the chain and may cause great bodily harm to personnel. The chainsaw should not be used for roof ventilations. The appropriate chainsaw for roof ventilation would be a gas-powered Stihl chainsaw equipped with a carbide tooth chain. The chainsaw should be carried with the brake engaged and the guide bar pointing rearward. The guide bar should be flipped after each use. Metal burrs that develop along the guide bar should be periodically removed using a flat file. PROCESS Prior to operating, the member is to ensure that they have a secure and firm footing. Follow the steps below to start the saw: 1. 2. 3. 4. Release the chain brake. Push down on the lock off lever. Squeeze the trigger. Once the saw is running, you may release the lock off lever. Inspecting the saw (daily): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Check the battery level, charge if necessary. Check the saw guide bar oil, add oil if necessary. Check the condition of the chain, tension, and proper direction of travel. Make a visual check of the chainsaw for loose fasteners and/or covers. Inspect the case for cracks. Inspect the guide bar oil tank for cracks/leaks. Removing the chain and guide bar: 1. Remove battery. 2. Remove the bar lock nuts on the sprocket cover using the wrench stored in the handle of the chainsaw. 3. Turn the side chain tensioner to release the chain. 4. Remove the guide bar and chain. Installing the guide bar and chain: 1. Remove battery. 2. Position the chain in the groove of the guide bar, starting at the tip. 3. Ensure that the cutters are on the top side of the guide bar facing the tip of the bar. 4. Point the guide bar tip away from the chain sprocket. 5. Place the chain around the chain sprocket. Slide the bar over the studs and the chain tensioning screw. 7. Tension the chain. a. b. c. d. Fit the sprocket cover on the studs and loosely secure the bar lock nuts. Give the guide bar upward tension. Tension the chain with the chain tensioning screw. A properly tensioned chain sits closely against the underside of the bar but can be pulled easily along the bar by hand. Always wear a glove when handling the chain. e. If the chain cannot be moved along the bar, it is too tight. 8. Once the chain is properly tensioned, tighten the bar lock nuts until the sprocket cover is firmly attached.
