Physical Attributes –The observable characteristics of a character, such as appearance, age, and mannerisms. 2. Personality Traits –The underlying qualities that shape how a character thinks, feels, and behaves. 3. Emotional Qualities – The character's temperament, moods, and reactions to different situations. Why are Character Traits Important? 1. Authenticity –Well-defined character traits make the protagonist and supporting cast feel genuine and relatable. 2. Motivation –Traits drive a character's actions and decisions, propelling the story forward in a meaningful way. 3. Character Arc – Evolving traits can showcase a character's growth and transformation over the course of the narrative. Identifying Physical Traits 1. Appearance-Characteristics like height, weight, hair, eye color, and distinctive features 2. Movement-How the character walks, gestures, and carries themselves. 3. Age & Health-Factors that influence the character's energy, mobility, and overall vitality. 4. Attire-Clothing, accessories, and grooming choices that reflect the character's style and personality. Identifying Personality Traits 1. Intelligent-Perceptive, analytical, and quick- witted. 2. Determined- Focused, resilient, and unwavering in pursuit of their goals. 3. Humorous- Playful, witty, and able to lighten the mood. Empathetic Caring, compassionate, and sensitive to the needs of others. FIGURES OF SPEECH FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE- most basic definition, figurative language is the use of different literary devices to make writing more impactful or effective. SIMILE-A direct comparison that shows the similarities between different things using the words like or as. Exampels:.He crept into the room as quiet as a mouse. The cloud was fluffy like cotton candy.. The snowflake sparkled like millions of tiny diamonds.. He was as angry as a grizzly bear. METAPHOR- It makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but which share common characteristics. EXAMPLES-.My baby brother is a cute little teddy bear.. The sun was a gleaming pearl.. My sister's memory is a camera that remembers everything we see.. The car seat is a fluffy cloud. Custard is happiness in a bowl. PERSONIFICATION-It refers to the idea or thing given with human attributes and feelings or spoken as if it were human. EXAMPLES-.The sun is smiling on us today.. My computer stubbornly refused to start.. The sofa is looking at me invitingly.. The rain is dancing on the roof HYPERBOLE - It involves exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis. EXAMPLES-. I must have walked a hundred miles!. He cried so long that he made a lake!. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!. You have a million toys at your house! IRONY-It is used in which words are used in a way that their intended meaning is different from their actual meaning Exampel-. Our 'luxury' hotel turned out to be a farm building.. The 'trip of our dreams' was, in fact, our worst nightmare. With dawn breaking the 'beautiful view' revealed itself to be a scrap-yard and rubbish tip. The use of inverted commas shows the reader that the statement is not true. Euphemism-The substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt Exampels- KINDS OF PRONOUNS PRONOUNS-Pronouns are used in place of nouns to help avoid repetition. The word the pronoun refers to is called the antecedent. 1.PERSONAL PRONOUNS-- used to replace nouns as subjects of objects of the sentence. They chance in form depending on person (first, second or third) and number of the antecedents (singular or plural). Example- 2. INTENSIVE PRONOUNS-serve to emphasize the noun that comes before them Example- thing. 3. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS- used when the object and the subject of the sentence refer to the same person or thing. Exampels 3. POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS- are used to show possession or ownership. Example- 4. DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS -used to point the location of noun or pronoun. When used, it should take note of the distance or time and the number. 5. INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS Interrogative pronouns are used in asking questions. 6.INDEFINITE PRONOUNS Indefinite pronouns are used to replace unknown or non-specific nouns. 7. RELATIVE PRONOUNS Relative pronouns point to a noun to show which person, place, or thing is discussed. Example ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY What is a short story? It is a brief fictional prose narrative that is shorter than a novel and that usually deals with only a few characters. It is usually concerned with a single effects conveyed in only one or few significant episodes or scenes 3. The Basic Elements of a Short Story 1. Setting -refers to the time and place in which the events occur. this includes the environment, weather, and historical period. these aspects provide a backdrop for the characters' actions in the story. they can also influence the narrative's plot, mood, and tone. 2. Characters - people, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of a story → Protagonists main character(s) who are most affected by the plot. Usually, but not always, they are the "good guys". →Antagonists - main character(s) who cause conflict for the protagonists. Usually, but not always, they are the "bad guys". 3. Plot- series of events that make up a story. It acts as the main structure that holds the story together. EXPLORING THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF A PLOT Other Elements of a Short Story THEME-The main idea that weaves the story together, the why, the underlying ideas of what happen in the story, often a statement about society or human nature. MOOD-The predominating or prevailing disposition and emotions revealed in the way the characters feel and behave. This may also be projected through the setting of the story or selection. Just as a person feels in many ways, different words can be ex-pressed as funny, sad, angry, happy, sympathetic, serious and many more.
