FIGURES OF SPEECH AND OTHER LITERARY TECHNIQUES Figures of Speech any intentional deviation from literal statement or common usage that emphasizes, clarifies, or embellishes both written and spoken language. POETIC TECHNIQUES Poetic devices are a form of literary device used in poetry. RHYTHM The regular, measured flow of words or phrases in a verse or prose. STANZA Recurrent grouping of two or more lines in a poem. VERSE A name given to any poetry or metrical composition. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas. Example: Love is a battlefield Recitation: Give an example of a metaphor PERSONIFICATION Device in which an inanimate object or idea, or an abstract concept is given human qualities I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
