According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. There are a variety of diseases called "flu" that refer to pandemics such as Avian or Swine Flu, but this training is focused on awareness of Influenza A and B, or Seasonal Flu, that affects thousands of people annually, and is primarily a respiratory illness. It is necessary to get a new vaccine every year because the dose is tailored by scientists to combat the specific strains of influenza they are seeing at that time. The protection only lasts one year. The vaccination is not 100% effective, but even if a vaccinated person contracts the flu, the symptoms will be milder, and the spread will be limited.
