Summary
This document contains a lab procedure, objectives, and pre/post-experiment questions related to transport mechanisms. The experiment involves placing eggs in different solutions (corn syrup and distilled water) and observing changes to study osmosis, diffusion, and active transport.

Transport Mechanisms Discussion Objectives Define active and passive transport Describe the different types of active and passive transport and be able to provide examples of each Simple diffusion, diffusion through channels, primary active, etc. Explain the factors which dictate the type and magnitude of transport Explain the process of osmosis Define iso-osmotic, hyper-osmotic, and hypo-osmotic Plasma Membrane- Phospholipid Bilayer Passive Vs Active Transport Passive: Simple Diffusion Passive: Diffusion Through Channels © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. Facilitated Diffusion Passive: Facilitated Diffusion Primary Active Transport Secondary Active Transport Endocytosis © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. Exocytosis © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. Factors to consider which dictate type and magnitude of transport Concentration gradient Size of the molecule Hydrophobic or hydrophilic Thickness and rigidity of plasma membrane Number of transporters Osmosis Osmosis – water movement when there is a difference in water concentration between two sides of a membrane Dependent on # of solute present in a given volume (concentration). Increasing solutes is the same as decreasing the water. Water moves to areas of highest concentration of solute If have a fully permeable membrane to water and solute then all substances: water and solute diffuse freely. But if selective membrane (impermeable to solutes) then only water moves resulting in volume increase on higher solute side of membrane. Define these terms Hyper-osmotic Hypo-osmotic Iso-osmotic Experiment Grab two eggs and weigh each one Make note of each egg and do not forget which egg is which Experiment Fill one container with high fructose corn syrup Put one egg in the corn syrup Fill one container with distilled water Put other egg in the distilled water Experiment After 25 minutes, remove the eggs Rinse off the egg that was in high fructose corn syrup in water bath Be careful Weigh each egg again Pre-experiment Questions Each group must answer these questions on a piece of a paper during the 25-minute waiting period and tell their TA the answers. The more detail the better. 1. What do you believe will happen to the egg placed in the corn syrup and why? 2. What do you believe will happen to the egg placed in the distilled water and why? Post-experiment Questions If you answered both pre-experiment questions correctly, congratulations! You’re done. If not, move onto questions #1 and/or #2. 1. If you got the egg in corn syrup question incorrect, explain where you went wrong and what the correct is 2. If you got the egg in distilled water question incorrect, explain where you went wrong and what the correct is
