What parts of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations must the driver have knowledge of? Although a commercial vehicle driver does not have to be equally familiar with all parts, the driver must have a working knowledge of: 1. Part 3832, Controlled Substances and Alcohol, Use and Testing; 2. Part 383, Commercial Driver’s License Standards; Require- ments and Penalties; 3. Part 391, Qualifications of Drivers: 4. Part 392, Driving Rules; 5. Part 393, Parts and Accessories Necessary for Safe Opera- tion; 6. Part 395, Hours of Service; 7. Part 396, Inspection and Maintenance; and, 8. Part 397 (if hauling hazardous materials) The driver must pay particular attention to the requirements of Parts 392 and 395. The driver should know enough about Parts 393 and 396 to ascertain that the equipment meets the require- ments of the regulations and is in safe operating condition. The driver should know the basic requirements of Part 391 so that the driver can remain qualified to drive. Drivers of hazardous materials should also be familiar with Parts 100-185.
