ACTIVE LEARNING EMBRYOLOGY Block: Foundations Block Director: James Proffitt, PhD Session Date: Tuesday, August 06, 2024 Time: 10:30 am – 12:00 pm Instructor: James Proffitt, PhD Department: Cellular & Molecular Medicine Email: [email protected] INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS Primary Method: IM07: Discussion, Large Group (>12) ✓ Flipped Session ☐ Clinical Correlation Resource Types: RE18: Written or Visual Media (or Digital Equivalent) INSTRUCTIONS This is a flipped session focusing on answering questions, reviewing core concepts, and clearing up misconceptions about the material. Please read lecture objectives and notes from the Foundations of Embryology + Early Development prior to attending this session. READINGS Required: Lecture notes and slides from “Foundations of Embryology & Early Development” lecture. Recommended: NA LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Evaluate the relative impact of teratogen exposure or congenital infection at different points in development. 2. Evaluate which germ layers would be involved in a given clinical scenario. 3. Infer which anatomical structures may be impacted by injury to a particular germ layer. 4. Differentiate between different types of twinning based on morphology and timing of division. 5. Apply material from the live foundations of development/early development lecture to a given clinical scenario. CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS Below are the competencies, educational program objectives (EPOs), course objectives, session learning objectives, disciplines and threads that most accurately describe the connection of this session to the curriculum. Related Related Competency\EPO Disciplines Threads COs LOs CO-02 LO-01 – MK-05: The altered Embryology H & I: Human 05 structure and function Development/Lifecycle (pathology & Block: Foundations | PROFFITT [1 of 3] ACTIVE LEARNING EMBRYOLOGY Related Related Competency\EPO Disciplines Threads COs LOs pathophysiology) of the body/organs in disease NOTES PLEASE REVIEW LECTURE NOTES AND VIEW LECTURE RECORDINGS FROM PREVIOUS EMBRYOLOGY LESSONS PRIOR TO SESSION. Key Concepts to Review: 1. Embryological Developmental Timeline vs. Gestational Developmental Timeline (Trimester System) 2. Critical Periods: what are the 3 stages of development and when will developmental injuries from teratogen exposure be most likely to be severe? 3. Practice germ layers, consider how to “chunk” anatomical structures by germ layer 4. Can you name the different types of twinning? a. Dizygotic b. Monozygotic i. Dichorionic Diamnonic ii. Monochorionic Diamnonic iii. Monochorionic Monoamnionic 5. Review the key events of the 3-4 weeks a. Week 1: Rule of 1s i. 1 embryonic precursor: embryoblast ii. 1 placental precursor: trophoblast iii. 1 fluid-filled sac: blastocoel b. Week 2: Rule of 2s i. 2 embryonic layers: epiblast, hypoblast ii. 2 embryonic contributions to placenta: cytotrophoblast, syncytiotrophoblast iii. 2 fluid-filled extraembryonic sacs/membranes: amnion, primary yolk sac (source of extraembryonic cells to chorion/connecting stalk) c. Week 3: Rule of 3s i. 3 germ layrs: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm ii. 3 “organs”: primitive streak, notochord, neural plate iii. 3 extraembryonic membranes: amnion, secondary yolk sac, allantois d. Week 4: Body folding i. Dorsal fold (neural groove) ii. Ventral fold (body cavities) iii. Craniocaudal fold (fetal position from head growth + elongation) Block: Foundations | PROFFITT [2 of 3] ACTIVE LEARNING EMBRYOLOGY Block: Foundations | PROFFITT [3 of 3]
