BONIFACIO COMPETENCY STANDARDS TECHNICAL SKILLS + BEHAVIORAL SKILLS = COMPETENCE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CORE COMPETENCY STANDARDS: The Core Competency Standards will serve as a unifying framework for Nursing Education, regulation and practice. Specifically it will serve as: Guide in developing curriculum in nursing. Framework in developing test syllabus for entrants into the nursing profession. Tool for performance evaluation among nurses. Basis for advanced practice and specialization. Framework for developing a training curriculum of nurses. Yardstick for unethical and unprofessional practice of Nursing. THE CORE COMPETENCY FOR THE ENTRY-LEVEL [ TERMINAL COMPETENCIES ] There are eleven (11) core competency areas for nursing practice that were identified which include the following: Safe and Quality Nursing Care Management of Resources & Environment Health Education Legal Responsibility Ethico-Moral Responsibility Personal and professional Development Quality Improvement Research Record Management Communication Collaboration and Teamwork 1. SAFE AND QUALITY NURSING CARE INDICATORS: Demonstrates knowledge based on the health illness status of individuals and groups Provides sound decision making in the care of individuals/ groups considering their beliefs and values. Promotes safety and comfort of patients Sets priorities in Nursing care based on patient’s needs Ensures continuity of care Administers medications and other health therapeutics Utilizes the Nursing Process as framework for nursing Formulates a plan of care in collaboration with patients and other members of the health team Evaluates progress toward expected outcomes Responds to the urgency of the patient’s condition 2. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT INDICATORS: Organize workload to facilitate patient care. Utilizes resources to support patient care. Ensures functioning of resources Maintains a safe environment 3. HEALTH EDUCATION INDICATORS: Assess the learning needs of the patient and family Develops health education plan based on assessed and anticipated needs. Develops learning materials for health education. Implements health education plan Evaluates the outcome of health education 4. LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY INDICATORS: Adheres to practices in accordance with the nursing law and other relevant legislation including contracts, informed consent. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures, local and national Documents care rendered to patients 5. ETHICO-MORAL RESPONSIBILITY INDICATORS: Respect the rights of individuals/ group Accepts responsibility and accountability for own decision and actions Adheres national and international code of ethics for nurses. 6. PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS: Pursues continuing education Identifies own learning needs Gets involved in professional organizations and civic activities. Projects a professional image of the nurse Possess positive attitudes towards change and criticisms. Performs function according to professional standards. 7. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT INDICATORS: Gathers data for quality improvement Participates in nursing audits Identifies and reports variances Recommends solutions to identified problems 8. RESEARCH INDICATORS: Gathers data using different methodologies. Recommends action for implementation Disseminates results of research findings Applies research findings in nursing practice 9. RECORDS MANAGEMENT INDICATORS: Maintains accurate and updated documentation of patient care Records outcome of patient care. Observes legal imperatives in recording and keeping. 10. COMMUNICATION INDICATORS: Establishes rapport with patients, significant others and members of the health team. Identifies verbal and non-verbal cues. Utilizes formal and informal channels. Responds to needs of individuals, family, group and community. Uses appropriate information technology to facilitate communication. 11. COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK INDICATORS: Establishes collaborative relationship with colleagues and other members of the health team Collaborates plan of care with other members of the health team.
