11/18/2023 Recalling from the last lesson 1. State what is active transport and the forms of passive transport 2. State what is passive transport and the forms of active transport 1 Topic 2 – The Cell System 2-5 Photosynthesis 1. How do plants and other organisms use photosynthesis to make food? 2. What are the roles of light, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll in photosynthesis? 3. What role does photosynthesis play in cycling materials and energy through ecosystems? 2 1 11/18/2023 Energy Transfer 3 Getting Energy from the Sun Photosynthesis • Cells capture energy in sunlight  make food (glucose) Photo - Light Syntithenai – Put together All organisms get energy directly (autotrophs) or indirectly (heterotrophs) from the sun. Autotrophs – make food and store it within themselves Heterotrophs – consume or absorb food from other organisms 4 2 11/18/2023 Photosynthesis Stage 1 Trapping Sun’s Energy • Chloroplast – green organelles that contain chlorophyll which can capture light energy to create oxygen and sugar • Sunlight splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. • Hydrogen will combines with other atoms (in Stage 2) • Oxygen is released as waste product through stomata in the underside of the leaves Product  substance formed after reaction takes place 5 Photosynthesis Stage 2 Making Glucose C6H12O6 • Hydrogen (H) from the splitting of water molecules combines with carbon dioxide (CO2) • Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through the stomata on the underside of leaves • Using the energy from Stage 1, hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to form glucose Note: Reactant  substances required for the reaction Product  substances formed from the reaction 6 3 11/18/2023 Photosynthesis Word equation carbon dioxide + water Chemical equation 6 CO2 6 H2O + Reactants light light glucose + oxygen C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Products 7 Use of Glucose • Cells break down glucose formed in chloroplasts for cellular respiration • Energy released from glucose help carry out other cell functions e.g. growing making seeds make other parts of the cell like the cellulose cell wall stored in other parts of the plant for use later (like in carrots or potatoes) 8 4 11/18/2023 Importance of Plant Cells • Rigid cell walls allow plants to store water Marsh plants are natural flood control when they store water • Plants, especially those living in the ocean absorb 1/6 of the sun’s energy to form oxygen • Oceanic plants are important in the recycling of oxygen on Earth 9 Rip Out pg 99-106 (7A due 10/30, 7B due 10/31) Do Pg 99 Fill in the blanks – where does the energy come from 101 Reading check & Model it 102 Photosynthesis of sugar 103 Label the plant and fill in the blanks 104 Reading check and fill in the blanks 105 Math toolbox & marsh plants 106 Lesson 5 check 10 5
