The Geography of Southeast Asia Physical Geography of Southeast Asia Notes no. 1 – The Concept of Asia ❖ Definition of Terms 1. geography – refers to the description of the world. 2. subcontinent – refers to the big landmass but is still a part of the continent. 3. continents – large landmasses separated by oceans. 4. topography – detailed description on a map of the natural and artificial features of an area. 5. physical features – considered in establishing regional divisions and boundaries like location, climate, and topography. ❖ The Origin of the Word “Asia” The Greeks first used the word “Asia” to define the small region closest to Europe. o It only refers to former Asia Minor or Anatolia, now part of Türkiye. o The vast landmass beyond it is called Asia Major. It comes from the Aegean word asu which means “place where the sun rises,” or east. o The term is a result of a European-centric perspective. ❖ Regions in Asia 1. Central Asia 4. East Asia 2.
