Summary

This document provides a detailed presentation on the anatomy of the maxillary second premolar. It covers various aspects, including its development, dimensions, and different perspectives (buccal, lingual, mesial, distal, and occlusal) of the tooth. This presentation is a useful teaching tool for students of dental sciences.

ANATOMY OF PERMANENT Maxillary nd 2 Premolar Dr. Sandeep Gupta Oral Pathologist  The maxillary second premolar, is the 5th tooth from the midline.  The premolars are so named because they are anterior to the molars in permanent dentition.  It is also called bicuspid.  1st evidence of calcification -- 1.5 to 2 yr  Enamel completed -- 6 to 7 yrs  Eruption -- 10 to 12 yrs  Root -- 12 to 14 yrs completed Dimensions (in mm) Cervico occlusal length of crown 8.5 Length of root 14 Mesiodistal diameter of crown 7 Mesiodistal diameter of crown at cervix 5 Buccolingual diameter of crown 9 Buccolingual diameter of crown at cervix 8 Curvature of cervical line mesially 1 Curvature of cervical line distally 0  Palmer’s  FDI notation -- 5 5 notation -- 15 & 25  Set -- permanent  Class -- premolar  Arch -- maxillary  Type -- second  Develop from the 4 lobs:  Three  One buccal lobs lingual lob Maxillary 1st premolar Maxillary 2nd premolar TWO CUSPS: Buccal Lingual Single ROOT Buccal aspect  The crown is roughly trapezoidal in shape.  Buccal cusp is shorter & less pointed than 1st premolar  The mesial slope of the buccal cusp is slightly shorter than the distal slope.  The distal cusp slope sometimes has a slight notch. Surface: it is convex Buccal ridge: Presence of the continuous ridge from cusp tip to cervical margin on the buccal surface Less prominent than 1st premolar. The Cervical Line ◦ Is slightly convex toward the root. The single root is tapering and the apical end may bend distally, mesially or the root may be straight. The root is usually longer than that of the maxillary first premolar and is flattened mesio-distally with a wider cervical portion. lingual aspect  The speroidal form  Surface:  lingual it is convex ridge: Presence of the continuous ridge from cusp tip to cervical margin on the lingual surface  Lingual cusp is shorter than buccal cusp  The tip of buccal cusp can seen from the lingual aspect mesial aspect  Cusps are shorter as compare to 1st premolar  Buccal & lingual cusps are nearly the same length  The cervical line: may be regular or irregular  Buccal & lingual outline & the crest of the curvature is mostly same as 1st premolar  The distance between cusp tips varies, the two cusp tips may be less closer than maxillary first premolar.  Mesial developmental depression: not present  A shallow developmental groove appears on the single tapered root distal aspect Almost same as mesial aspect, except;  The distal root depression is deeper than mesial.  Contact Points; Height of Curvature.  When viewed from the facial, the distal contact area is located more cervically than is the mesial contact area. occlusal aspect  There are two well-defined cusps buccal and lingual.  The  The larger cusp is the buccal. outline of crown is more rounded or oval  The central developmental groove is shorter & more irregular  More irregular & wrinkled occlusal surface due to multiple supplementary grooves that terminate in shallow depression.  Greater distance between cusp tips, so occlusal surface is wider buccolingually.  Right and Left: 1. Mesio-buccal cuspal slope is shorter than disto-buccal cuspal slope. 2. The distal developmental depression on root Thank You
