CHEM 1303 Chemical Principles EXAM 1 – Chapters, 2 and 3. Chapter 2: Chemistry and Measurements Section 2.1: Units of Measurement Write the names and abbreviations for the metric or SI units used in measurements of volume, length, mass, temperature and time. Section 2.2: Measured Numbers and Significant Figures Identify a number as measured or exact. Determine the number of significant figures in a measured number. Section 2.3: Significant Figures in Calculation Adjust calculated answers to give the correct number of significant figures. Apply standard rules of rounding off. Section 2.4: Prefixes and Equalities Use the numerical values of prefixes to write a metric equality. Section 2.5: Writing Conversion factors Write a conversion factor in metric and/or US system for two units that describe the same quantity. Section 2.6: Problem Solving Using Unit Conversion Use conversion factors to change from one unit to another using dimensional analysis. Section 2.7: Density Calculate the density of a substance. Use the density to calculate the mass or volume of a substance. Chapter 3: Matter and Energy Section 3.1: Classification of Matter Classify examples of matter as pure substances or mixtures. Classify examples of matter as elements or compounds. Classify examples of matter as homogeneous or heterogeneous mixtures. Section 3.2: States and Properties of Matter Identify the states of the matter. Identify the chemical and physical properties of the matter. Section 3.3: Temperature Given a temperature, calculate the corresponding temperature on another scale. Section 3.4: Energy Identify energy as potential or kinetic. Convert between units of energy. Section 3.5: Energy and Nutrition Use the energy values to calculate the nutritional calorie (Cal), kilocalories (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ) for a food. Section 3.6: Specific Heat Predict heat loss or gain when comparing samples of matter given their specific heat values. Use specific heat to calculate heat loss or gain. Section 3.7: Changes of State Describe the changes of state between solids, liquids and gases: melting, freezing, sublimation, deposition, vaporization and condensation. Interpret heating and cooling curves. Skip heat of fusion or vaporization calculations.
