HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: SAFETY OPERATIONS – 011 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Hearing Conservation – Apparatus Intercom Revision: Headsets 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2025 Fire Chief 1 PURPOSE To reduce potential exposure from harmful noise while operating apparatus and vehicles during emergency and non-emergency operations. To improve communications between vehicle operators, officers and other crew members. POLICY Radio/Intercom Headsets have been installed on all front line apparatus (except ambulances). These headsets will allow for constant communications between the officer, driver and crewmembers. In addition, headsets will provide hearing protection from excessive apparatus operating noise. The Mobile Radio System includes an intercom interface that allows the officer and crew members to be in constant communication. In addition, the officer can transmit and receive radio messages. The crew members can hear all radio messages. PROCEDURE All personnel on board shall wear the available headsets at all times the apparatus is driven or operated.
