[00:00:00] >> [MUSIC] [00:00:08] The movement system. This is the objective. The vision statement for the American Physical Therapy Association is that we are transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience. Purposeful movement is a fundamental characteristic of human behavior in life. A person's individuality is expressed by their own pattern of muscle contractions. [00:00:33] Think about facial expressions, body postures, fine motor skill performances such as typing or playing an instrument and gross motor activities such as walking or playing sports. An individual with a normal functioning neuromuscular system has a remarkable ability to develop just the right amount of muscle force needed to perform an endless variety of motor tasks. [00:00:54] Human health and human quality of life depend on the ability to move skillfully and efficiently. Coordinated movement is critical for people to accomplish meaningful goals. Movement is life as Mashe Feldenkrais stated. One of the principles of the American Physical Therapy Association vision statement is identity. You can see that the movement playsa part in each of these. [00:01:20] The PT professional define and promote the movement system as a foundation for optimizing movement to improve the health of society. Will be recognized and validated the movement system is essential to understand the structure, function and potential of the human body. The PT will be responsible for evaluating and managing an individual's movement system across the lifespan. [00:01:44] And the movement system is a core PT practice, education, and research. Coordinated movement is a result of many muscles acting on the bony skeleton that's organized by the nervous system and refined by multiple sensory mechanisms to produce the mechanical responses. Human movement requires activation and integration of multiple parts of multiple systems within a very short period of time. [00:02:08] Movement's not the result of one single muscle acting across the joint, but an integrated system of the brain and the body that responds, executes, interprets, and adjusts to continual feedback. A system is a combination of parts that form a functioning unit. Human movement is a system made up of several contributing elements, such as the nervous system, muscular, skeletal, and sensory systems, that allow us to study both the structure and function of movement simultaneously. [00:02:37] Human movement is the integration of body systems that generate and maintains movement at all levels of bodily function. Human movement is complex behavior within a specific context and is influenced by social, environmental, and personal factors. When we look at movement, we must look at the interaction of the individual, the task, and the environment, because movement is a very complex behavior. [00:03:07] PTs provide a unique perspective on purposeful, precise, and efficient movement across the lifespan based on the combination of their distinct knowledge of the movement system and their expertise in mobility and locomotion. PTs examine and evaluate the movement system to provide a customized and integrated plan of care to help individuals achieve their goals. [00:03:26] And PTs maximize an individual's ability to engage with and respond to their environment using movement related interventions to optimize functional capacity and performance. This is our program's clinical reasoning framework. And you can see that movement is a critical part of our clinical reasoning. We must do a movement analysis to help us complete our evaluation, determine our diagnosis, prognosis, plan of care, and intervention. [00:03:54] You will continue to see this model throughout the curriculum. In this class, we're going to learn a systematic way of looking at movement analysis. Starting with looking at initial conditions, the preparation phase of movement, initiation of movement, execution, termination or completion of a movement, and the overall outcome. The movement system is part of research. [00:04:22] There are multiple research articles and perspectives published, and there are continued conversations at the local, regional, and national levels on how the movement system plays a role in our profession. And researching the specific aspects of the movement system and the global aspects of the movement system and how that impacts individuals and society as well. [00:04:45] The movement system is also used to guide education and clinical practice. Exercises movement and movement is physical therapy. And that's what we want you to start thinking about as you take this journey to become physical therapists. The movement system is core of PT practice, education, and research. And it's important for us to understand movement as it's recognized as our content area of expertise. [00:05:17] But movement does not stop in the clinic. We can think about movement in sports and recreational activities, and how it can help us engage with others. We can think about movement and how we can help create better walking and biking trails in our communities and make transportation safer. [00:05:33] And we can think about how movement can help with social connection and engaging with nature. The references.
