Histology of Connective Tissue III By: Dr. Moustafa Al Sawy Dr. Shaimaa Mohamed Amer MBBCH, M.SC. M.D HISTOLOGY MBBCH, M.SC. M.D HISTOLOGY Associate Professor of Histology & Cell Biology Associate Professor of Histology & Cell Biology Certified Medical Educator Learning objectives Knowledge: Learning Objectives At the end of the lecture , each student will be able to: 1.List the types of the connective tissue & describe the histological features of each one. Types of Connective Tissue Classification of C.T. Specialized C.T. -Adipose C.T. proper Supporting C.T. - Reticular -Loose C.T. Bone - Mucoid -Dense C.T Cartilage - Elastic -Hemopoietic C.T. proper loose C.T (loose Dense C.T. areolar tissue Loose C.T (loose areolar tissue) Large amount of C.T in the body Contain variety of cell and fibers (more cells than fibers). Function Supports epithelial tissue It is flexible vascular & does not resist stress. Site: Lamina propria and submucosa of various tracts (respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, etc.) and hypodermis. Dense C.T. It is formed principally of collagenous fibers, with few cells and matrix. Resists stress than loose C.T. less flexible. Types: 1- Dense regular 2- Dense irregular Dense Regular C.T. Dense Irregular C.T. Site: tendons and cornea of the eye. Site: sclera of the eye, capsule of organs and outer fibrous layer of the periosteum & perichondrium and dermis of the skin. Structure: Parallel regular collageneous bundles with Fibroblasts or fibrocytes Structure: Irregular collageneous bundles between the bundles. with Fibroblasts or fibrocytes between the bundles. Dense Regular C.T. Dense Irregular C.T. Specialized C.T. Adipose Mucoid Reticular Elastic Yellow elastic tissue Sites: -Arteries -True vocal cords -Ligaments of vertebral column Structure: Regular elastic fibers with Fibroblasts or fibrocytes between the fibers. Function: Gives the tissue elasticity. Reticular C.T. Sites: Stroma of parenchymatous organs e.g. liver, spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow. Structure: Formed of reticular cells and reticular fibers that form a network. Function: Supporting frameworks. Mucoid C.T. Sites: -Umbilical cord -Pulp of young tooth -Vitreous humor of the eye Structure: The matrix is soft as it is rich in mucin and hyaluronic acid. *Young fibroblasts which intercommunicate with long processes. Function: Supporting frameworks. Adipose C.T. 1- Brown adipose C.T. 2- White adipose C.T. White adipose C.T. Brown (multilocular) (unilocular) adipose C.T. Color White. Color Brown. Sites The majority of adipose C.T. in adults e.g. subcutaneous Sites tissue. *in newborn infants. *In adults: in Mediastinum. ,between the 2 scapulae. Structure: *Lobules of large white adipocytes separated by loose Structure: C.T. *Lobules of small brown adipocytes separated by loose * Cytoplasm contains a large fat globule (single) C.T. * The large fat globule pushes the nucleus to one side→ * Cytoplasm contains numerous fat droplets. signet ring appearance. * The nucleus is eccentric and rounded. * Less blood capillaries. * More blood capillaries. EM EM Few mitochondria and sER around the nucleus. Numerous mitochondria surrounding the fat droplets. Functions: 3 S 1-Storage of fat (energy depot). Function: 2- Heat insulation. Rapid heat production on exposure to cold. 3-Body contour (smooth curves in females) 4-Support organs (kidney). White adipose C.T. Brown adipose C.T. Any Questions?
