Storage and IO devices INFORMATION SHEET 1.1-5 www.facebook.com/itsmeismael LEARNING OBJECTIVES identify the output and input device explain, elaborate and classify the different computer peripherals and its components www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Input device an input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or other information appliance. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael example of input device webcam scanner mouse keyboard fingerprint scanner www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Output device An output device is any peripheral that receives data from a computer, usually for display, projection, or physical reproduction. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael example of output device headphone projector printer speaker Monitor / TV www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Storage device A storage, storage media, or storage medium, a storage device is a hardware device capable of holding information. Primary storage is also known as main storage or memory, is the main area in a computer in which data is stored for quick access by the computer's processor. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Secondary storage Referred to as external memory and secondary storage is a storage medium that holds information until it is deleted or overwritten regardless if the computer has power. SSD is a storage medium that uses non-volatile memory as a means of holding and accessing data. HDD is a non-volatile memory hardware device that permanently stores and retrieves data on a computer. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Flash drive USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, much smaller than a floppy disk. Storage capacities typically range from 4 GB to 128 GB. Optical disc referred to as a disc drive, optical media, optical storage, Optical disc drive, and optical disk, an optical disc is any media read using a laser assembly. The most common types of optical media are Blu-ray, CDs, and DVDs. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael External drive external drives are often stored in an enclosure that helps protect the drive and allows it to interface with the computer, usually over USB or eSATA. Flash memory card A memory card or flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage device used with digital cameras, handheld and Tablet/Mobile computers, and other electronics. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Cloud storage It is a model of networked storage where data is stored not in the user's computer, but in virtualized pools of Google Drive storage which are usually hosted by iCloud third parties. OneDrive Dropbox mozy www.facebook.com/itsmeismael Network-attached storage (NAS) Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. www.facebook.com/itsmeismael
