Bone Physiology and Metabolism and Related Disorders PDF

Summary

This document discusses bone physiology and metabolism, including the role of myofibrils in muscle function. It covers the sarcoplasm and its components, and highlights the importance of thick and thin filaments in skeletal muscle contraction.

# Myofibrils Consist of Thick Filaments and Thin Filaments - The **sarcoplasm** contains many of the organelles found in the cytoplasm of other cells, such as nuclei, golgi apparatuses, ribosomes, and mitochondria - However, ~80% of the volume of the sarcoplasm is devoted to the rod-like **myofibrils** (~1 um diameter), bundled in parallel and running the entire length of the cell - The myofibrils consist of **thick filaments** and **thin filaments** - The myofibrils represent the contractile machinery of skeletal muscle (and cardiac muscle too; but not smooth muscle, as we will find out).
