**VS105 Handout \#2** **Unit \#1- SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS** **DESIGN AND FUNCTION Part 2** **Objectives:** **1. List the 2 common sizes of scalpel handles** **2. Identify the difference between small animal and large animal scalpel blades** **3. Explain how scissors are classified** **4. Identify the 5 types of scissors and classify the type of blade in which they come** **5. State the difference between thumb tissue and thumb dressing forceps** **6. Identify the 3 types of thumb forceps** **[Cutting Instruments: ]** 1. **SCALPELS** - Very \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ division of tissues with minimal damage to nearby structures - Sharp cuts cause \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_trauma and heal faster in some tissues ie. Skin - Sharp cuts will often cause \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ bleeding in some tissues Eg. \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ **SCALPEL HANDLES** Different size scalpel handles are available; \#3 -- often called a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ handle \#4 -- often called a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ handle Handles are designed to hold scalpel blades - - - used for descriptive reference - ![disposable scalpel](media/image2.jpeg) **SCALPEL BLADES** - given a number which indicates both size and shape of scalpel blade. - Numbers range from \#1 -- 22 **How to apply a blade to the handle:** - Using needle drivers, grasp blade near the middle - Ensure the sharp edge is facing away from you - There are small \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ on the handle tip that will fit with the cut-out portion of the blade. - Should sit flush and not have any raised edges **How to remove a blade from the handle:** 1. Grip blade with forceps or needle holders - Grasp near the \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ of the blade (Point A) - Have the cutting edge facing\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ from hand and body. - Ensure the blade is pointing downwards and towards the trolley and not towards another member of your team. 2. **SCISSORS** - Used for cutting through tissue, and \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_tissues (called \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_dissection), and cutting suture material - They must be kept sharp, or they will \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_tissue rather than cutting it - Available in many lengths - Should only be used for their intended purpose **Scissors are classified by their name or purpose:** A. **Operating Scissors/Surgery scissors** - Intended use is to cut **inanimate** objects such as gauze or suture Classified by: **a**. **Type of \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_--straight or curved** **b**. **Type of \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_** ![OPERATING SCISSORS, 10.5CM](media/image12.jpeg) OPERATING SCISSORS, 11.5CM B. **Mayo Scissors**: - Intended Purpose: to cut large \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_masses, cartilage or other non-delicate tissue - Can be \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ or curved - To identify -- Mayo scissors are always "\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_" in the middle and \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ at the end. - They are always a **Blunt Blunt** scissor with thick blades about \_\_\_\_\_the length of the instruments' length ![A pair of scissors and tweezers Description automatically generated](media/image14.png) **C) Metzenbaum Scissors**: - Used for \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ surgical dissection - Blades are \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ and approximately ¼ of the instrument's overall length - Shaft is long and thin - Long handled **blunt blunt** scissors with a relatively short blade - More\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_scissor than Mayo scissor D**) Suture Scissors**: - Used to cut and remove suture material. - Have a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ on one blade which is used to slip under pull up the suture material. **E) Bandage Scissors**: - Used specifically to cut bandage material. - The bottom jaw is blunted and \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_, and rests on the skin to protect it from being cut. **F) Iris scissors:** - Very small scissors with fine blades used specifically for \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_work. - Can be \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_or blunt blunt blades just like regular surgery scissors 3. **THUMB FORCEPS** - Designed for \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_and holding tissues and dressing material - They have a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ action -- you have to force the jaws together - Should be held between the \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ and the middle and index fingers (hold like a pencil) **THUMB *[TISSUE]* FORCEPS** - Have \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ that allow tissue to be held with a minimum amount of crushing and prevents \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ - - - Also known as " \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_" **Adson Thumb Tissue Forceps** **Adson *[Brown]* Thumb Tissue Forceps** **THUMB [*DRESSING*] FORCEPS** - Have \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_-- blunt ends and serrations on the tips - Used for applying and removing \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ and handling hollow viscera with no damage ![](media/image23.jpeg)
