Lecture 1 (August 26): Need to know The neuron basics “Need to Know” comes from class notes and text (LO 2.1, 2.2, and 2.6-2.9) Know the basics of neuron anatomy and function and its components Know the different ions and their distribution for a neuron at rest. Also know the different forces on the ions, what changes happen to initiate an action potential, and the neuron’s return to resting state Know how the action potential is propagated and what triggers the release of neurotransmitters Know historical examples of scientific thought or evidence of pharmacological “know-how” and potential issues with these approaches (Class Notes slides 25, 28, 29) Know the general concepts around how modern advances in science and/or politics affected cultural use of “drugs” that originate from coca and cannabis plants - cocaine was used safely for centuries until modern science came in to isolate the active ingredient and kept upping the potency/purity until it became dangerous - despite being consistently advocated by the medical community, marijuana was banned for political/socioeconomic reasons - you do not need to know about specific dates or specific people/societies Know the difference between cannabis products that are high/low for CBD and THC The historical perspective material comes from Class Notes only. 1
