# The Earth's Mechanism ## 1. The Continental Drift Theory * States that all continents were once one large landmass that broke apart, and the pieces moved slowly to their current locations. * Proposed by Alfred Wegener. He said that the continents were once one large landmass called PANGEA, a supercontinent. ### Evidences of the Continental Drift Theory **a. The Continental Jigsaw Puzzle** * The edges of one continent match the edge of another. **b. Evidence from Fossils** * Fossils are preserved remains or traces of organisms from the past. * Glossopteris – an extinct plant in which its fossilized leaves were found in 250 million years old rocks. These were found in South Africa, Australia, India, and Antarctica. * Mesosaurus and Lystosaurus – freshwater reptiles. Their fossils were discovered in continents such as South America, Africa, and Antarctica. **c. Evidence from Rocks** * Rock formations in Africa line up with those in South America as if it was a long mountain range. **d. Coal Deposits** * Formed from the compaction and decomposition of swamp plants that lived millions of years ago. ## 2. The Seafloor Spreading * Proposed by Harry Hess and Robert Dietz. * Process by which new ocean floor is formed near the mid-ocean ridge and moves outward. * Results in the creation of new bodies of water.
