# Natural rights & Declaration of independence ## What's a social contract? A social contract is an agreement made between the people and the government to protect natural rights. ## Natural rights: A basic set of rights that all people are entitled to. (E.g life, liberty, and property). ## What agreement is made between the government and the people? * Government gets their power to rule in exchange for protecting the people's natural rights. * People get protection of their natural rights in exchange for following the laws of the government. ## The social contract gone bad ### Absolute power: Government possess too much power. As a result, they take away rights from people. (E.g dictatorship) ### State of nature: Government is too weak to protect the people. People take rights from each other. (E.g anarchy)
