WORLD OF SPORTS About Olympics The first-ever Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Since then, the Olympic Games are held every four years. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 The Olympic motto is ‘Citius-Altius-Fortius’. The three Latin words translate to ‘Faster-Higher-Stronger’ in English. The history of the Games goes back around 3,000 years, to the in Ancient Greece. Sports contests organized at Olympia took place every four years and acquired the name Olympic Games. The four-year interval between the Ancient Games editions was named an Olympiad”, and was used for dating purposes at the time: time was counted in Olympiads rather than years. Since 1991, any new sport seeking to join the Olympic program must have women’s competitions. \With the addition of women’s boxing to the Olympic program, the 2012 Games in London were the first in which women competed in all the sports on the program. The Olympics have often been influenced by global events and politics. They were canceled during world war I and World War II Winter Olympics The Winter Olympics were introduced in 1924, and the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities began in the mid-20th century The first Winter Games were held in Chamonix (France), in 1924. Initially called the “International Winter Sports Week”, this event was renamed the “1st Olympic Winter Games” only in 1926 at the IOC Session in Lisbon. This was his second Olympic medal, making him India's fifth two-time Olympic medallist. Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. She also became the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Games by clinching a medal in both individual and mixed team events. India won three shooting medals, including the first-ever Olympic medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions, achieved by Swapnil Kusale. This was the highest tally for India in shooting at the Olympics. Indian athletes competed in 69 medal events across 16 sports, such as archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis. Lakshya Sen became the first Indian to reach the semi-finals in men’s badminton at the Olympics, finishing fourth. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat after reaching the final in the women’s 50 kg category, Phogat was disqualified for being overweight by 100 grams. To date, India has won a total of 41 Olympic medals. Notable milestones include Norman Pritchard's Silver Medals (1900 Paris), KD Jadhav’s Bronze (1952 Helsinki), Karnam Malleswari's Bronze (2000 Sydney), Abhinav Bindra's Gold (2008 Beijing), and Neeraj Chopra's Gold (2020 Tokyo). Men's Hockey has won 13 medals, including eight golds, and Wrestling has won eight medals. India's best-ever Olympic performance was at Tokyo 2020, with seven medals, including one gold. India's second-best performance was in the 2012 London Olympics when it won six medals (two silver and four bronze) ASIAN GAMES The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia(OCA) under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In February, 1949 the Asian Athletic Federation was formally formed and used the name Asian Games Federation. It was decided to hold the first Asian Games in 1951 in New Delhi, the capital of India. SOUTH ASIAN GAMES South Asian Games (SAF Games) are a bi-annual multisport event held among the athletes from South Asia. The governing body of these games is South Asian Sports Council (SASC), formed in 1983. At present, SAG are joined by seven members namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In 2004, it was decided in the meeting of a SASC to rename the games from SAF Games to South Asian Games. ▪ First Games (1984): Kathmandu Nepal ▪ Recent South Asian Games(2019): Kathamandu, Pokhara and Janakpur, Nepal. ▪ South Asian Games (2025): Lahore (Pakistan) COMMONWEALTH GAMES The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organization which is responsible for the direction and control of the commonwealth Games. The first commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. In 2002, the CGF introduced the David Dixon Award for the outstanding athlete of the Games. It was originally simply known as the World Cup or Coupe du onde, but in 1946 it was renamed after the FIFA president Jules Rimet who set up the first tournament. After FIFA was founded in 1904, the 1950 World Cup was the first to include British participants. An equivalent tournament for women's football, the FIFA Women's World Cup, was first held in 1991 in the People's Republic of China and since then it is held every four years. It is contested by the men's national football teams of the member nations of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. Brazil is the only nation to have participated in every World Cup so far. Miroslav Klose of Germany is the top goal scorer in the football world cup tournament with total 16 goals. Just Fontaine of France holds the record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup; all his 13 goals were scored in the 1958 World Cup.
