WINDOWS 10 -- What\'s New?? - iLink Digital **Unit 9 -- Administration** - Screen - Actions - Applications and features - Start, Shut Down, and Sleep - Storage - Windows Update - Windows Defender On many occasions, the use of computer devices presents problems of various kinds related to the Operating System, from strange responses to some action we want to perform to slowing down the execution of an application and even total failure. At other times, like cars, operating systems, not just Windows, require maintenance to continue functioning optimally. On the other hand, there are parameters that we can modify so that the system\'s behavior changes to meet our preferences better, for example, by turning off toast notifications or by modifying default apps for specific files. Therefore, for any operating system, but for Windows in particular, which is the one we are interested in, we have two types of administrative tools: Those that allow us to deal with problems and failures that arise and others that will enable us to modify the system\'s configuration to adjust its behavior. It\'s crucial to note that some of the operating system administration tools in the menu are quite advanced and their misuse can have serious implications for Windows. Therefore, it\'s not advisable to use them without a comprehensive understanding of their functions. On the other hand, there are tools that can be beneficial for users of any level, so it\'s equally important to familiarize yourself with them. In this unit, we\'ll be exploring a range of system administration tasks, many of which can be found in the familiar Settings window under the System section. From managing your screen and applications to handling storage and Windows updates, we\'ll cover it all. ![Graphical user interface, application, Teams Description automatically generated](media/image2.png) A screenshot of a phone Description automatically generated with medium confidence ![Graphical user interface, application, Teams Description automatically generated](media/image4.png) We can indicate your position in the settings window if the numbers do not match your location. Suppose monitor 2 is actually to the right of number 3. Therefore, we must move it with the mouse, as follows. ![Chart Description automatically generated](media/image6.png) An exciting feature of Windows 10 when we use more than one monitor, which it didn\'t have in previous versions, is that it gives each one a taskbar and a **Start** menu. In earlier versions, only the primary monitor (number 1) had the menu, so now it is more comfortable to operate multi-monitors. Now, if we have more than one monitor and want to modify a parameter of a particular one, we must click on it in the previous view. The color-highlighted monitor will be the one that is affected by the changes we make at the bottom of the settings window, while the rest will appear in gray. If we only have one monitor in the absolute majority of cases, it will be highlighted by default. **Orientation**. We always use Horizontal orientation by default. However, some tasks may require us to use our monitor in an upright position (e.g., in editorial work). To complete the picture, the drop-down list also includes the ability to flip the screen horizontally and vertically, which is rare. This option can also be found on laptop key combinations and external displays on their button panel. In any case, we can also do it in this window. **Multiple screens**. As we have already indicated, in the context of more than one monitor, such as the one we are showing, please review all the possibilities, extending the desktop or repeating the same desktop in each or some other combination, as we can see in the list. If we extend the desktop, we will be able to work with several applications at the same time, having them all in view. Duplicating the desktop can be helpful, for example, for a presentation, where one large screen can be directed to the audience and the other, presenting the same desk, can be used for the exponent. ![Text Description automatically generated](media/image8.png) Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated Here, you have the power to fundamentally modify the resolution of your selected screen. You also have four leagues with more related configuration options at your disposal: **Color calibration**. It opens a wizard that empowers you to precisely calibrate the color values of your selected monitor, enhancing its visibility. This calibration is crucial for professionals like designers, printers, advertisers, filmmakers, etc., who demand strict color adjustments for their work. **ClearType text**. This option, which is appropriate for LCD and LED displays, can be turned on or off by default. It also allows you to use a wizard to set the best resolution and image quality on each screen. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image10.png) **Notifications and actions** Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated ![Table Description automatically generated](media/image12.png) We see the change in the **Action Center** Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated **Select the icons that will appear on the taskbar**. This option opens the following window where we simply have to activate or deactivate the icons we want to appear on the right side of the taskbar. The list that appears is different from computer to computer depending on the applications installed. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image14.png) Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated **Applications and features** ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image16.png) Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated In any case, when you click on an app from the list, you\'ll get the button that will allow you to uninstall it. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image18.png) **Applications with Installer**. When we purchase applications over the Internet, or download free programs or trial versions, we download a single file. To start the installation, simply double-click on this file. **Apps without installer.** Some programs, usually simpler and more free applications, do not even require installation. All you have to do is unzip the files into a folder. In the folder we will find an executable file (***.exe***) that will launch the application. To avoid having to search for the file every time we want to use the application, we can create a shortcut to this file on the desktop. These programs are removed manually, deleting all their files, since only programs that have gone through an installation process require an uninstallation process. In the first two cases, an installation wizard will open. Depending on the program, through one or more windows we can, for example, choose where to install it, which components to install, the language, etc. - Copy the program files to the **Program Files folder** (also called **Program Files**), although we can specify another folder during installation (but it is not recommended). - Create a folder with shortcuts in the **Start** menu, under **All Programs**. It may also ask us if we want to create a shortcut on the **Desktop**. **Start/Off and Sleep** **Storage** Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated ![](media/image23.png) ![Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated](media/image25.png) In Windows 10, updates are downloaded and installed automatically by default. Once the system update process is complete, we will get a notification in the Action **Center**. Unlike previous versions of Windows, finding, downloading, and installing updates is not optional. This process should always be carried out so that Microsoft ensures its users have their operating systems updated. When we click **Advanced options**, the most we can modify is when the computer must be restarted to install the downloaded updates. ![](media/image28.png) We can also see a history of updates and, eventually, uninstall some. However, this action is not recommended except in very particular circumstances where we can establish that installing an update affects the system or some other application. Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated **Windows Defender** ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image31.png) If the above option is active, we can send them automatically. That is, without prior notification. Please list exclusions to prevent **Windows Defender** from detecting them as malware. When you open the application, you can analyze newly connected disk drives, such as USB sticks or external hard drives, or simply scan your computer completely to ensure that there are no threats present.
