Different parts of the world are at risk for different natural disasters. In mountainous areas, avalanches are huge drifts of snow that rush downward. Volcanoes erupt hot gases and melted rock from miles below the earth's surface. Tornadoes, hurricanes, and typhoons are caused by tremendous winds. Earthquakes result from moving plates deep in the earth. Tsunamis are huge ocean waves caused by undersea earthquakes or volcanoes. ## Think About It What kinds of natural disasters might occur where you live?
