Marine Power Plant (DMARPOWER) Prepared by : Chief Eng. Hamid Reza Soltani Semester-1 2024-2025 LESSON 21 Marine power plant (deck officer) - Mooring winch and anchor windlass Marine Diesel Engine Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - Discuss operation of the mooring winches and anchor windlass - Take Correct action and maintenance related to safe operation of a mooring and windlass Important Points For Ship’s Mooring Equipment Maintenance Correct operation of the mooring equipment onboard is indeed important for the overall safe operation of a vessel in port. (Singh, 2019) (Korlaske, n.d.) (Menon, 2020) brake lining (DELLNER BUBENZER, n.d.) Checks Prior Mooring – After sea passage or a passage in heavy seas and prior to mooring operation, ensure to check the following : 1- check physical damages to the mooring mechanism. 2- check controls, linkages 3- levers are well oiled, greased 4- check levers for operation and free to move 5- inspect all the brake drums and linings are dried and clean 6- inspect gear hydraulic oil (Singh, 2019) (Menon, 2020) Mooring Prevention check and maintenance: 1- walkway should be clean and free of obstructions and oil 2- check gratings and brackets for corrosion and rust 3- steel wire mooring ropes must be greased and lubricated 4- check grease nipples to be free from rust, salt or paint 5- regular maintenance and painting 6- check the drums for any sign of corrosion or wear (Singh, 2019) (Menon, 2020) Important check on the drums or the brake linings related the brake holding capacity The following items must be checked 1-Check and maintain the brake linings for wear and tear (thickness should check and replace if necessary) 2-Check for Oil(very difficult to remove, need to replace the lining) 3- check and clean heavy rust (wiped out the rust and clean it) 4- check and remove the moisture(apply the brake smoothly while running) All above items can reduce the brake holding capacity seriously more than 75% (Singh, 2019) Windlasses Driven methods: 1- electrical motors 2- hydraulic motor and pump Windlass important parts: 1-main shaft 2-driving shaft(connect to motor) 3-gear and pinion 4- inspection cover 5-drums 6- brake 7-coupling 8- clutch 9- chain wheel 10- speed control valves block (Menon, 2020) Safety important points while operating the anchor windlass: 1- put the mooring winch brake ‘on’ and the clutch in disengage position for the winch before operating the windlass(if windlass and mooring are coupled) 2- drop and stop the anchor at every ½ shackle is advisable to prevent damages to brake liner due to temperature rise (high speed anchoring can damage the brake) 3- In rough weather it is necessary to loosen the anchor chain tension while heaving up by using engines to avoid excessive load on the windlass (Bhanawat, 2021) (Menon, 2020) Safety important points while operating the anchor windlass: 4- greasing and lubricating the bearings weekly 5- check the condition of the brake lining monthly 6- inspect piping for leakage, and condition of valves 7- check foundation and foundation bolts for tightness and sign of wear 8-Never leave a winch in gear with the winch band brake on 9-Insulation tests for electrical equipment (Bhanawat, 2021) (Menon, 2020) immediate action in case of the brake lining damage 1- inform the master 2- plan to replace the defective the brake lining 3- order to supply new brake lining 4- check the another fore and aft windlass the brake lining condition 5- secured the aft port windlass by extra lashing instead of brake 6- Measure size of the brake lining along with size number of bolts and nut (Bhanawat, 2021) Important points during brake lining replacement 1- secure the chain and anchor with extra lashings 2- job should be carried out in calm waters without any uneven rolling or pitching. 3-all the pins connecting to the brake has to move smoothly, 4-clean and grease the pins 5- mark the position of the brake screw down lever and position of brake bands 6- check condition of supporting plate surface (Bhanawat, 2021) References: Singh, B.
