Hamid Reza Soltani Semester-1 2023-2024 LESSON 11 and 12 Marine power plant (deck officer) - diesel engine operating systems(part 3 and 4 ) Marine Diesel Engine Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: -explain the principal of operation of the crankcase oil mist detector and function of each components -discuss auxiliary diesel engine starting system and its components by using a diagram -discuss the cross-head 2-stroke diesel engine starting system and its components by using a diagram. TASK9: CRANKCASE OIL MIST DETECTOR When the engine is running, lubricating oil used in crankshaft bearing splash around the crankcase. This splashing creates a mist inside the crankcase but this mist is not of the level that can get ignited. The oil mist detector fitted in the crankcase to measure the level of the oil mist and give alarm when the level become more than normal level. Study the drawing and discuss the function of each part in the crankcase oil mist detector device. TASK 9: CRANKCASE OIL MIST DETECTOR Discuss the function of each part in the crankcase oil mist detector device. 1. Reference tube: One tube is sealed to contain clean air and is termed the reference tube 2. Measuring tube: install between selector and fan and crankcase vapor(sample) passes through this tube to measure 3. photo-electric cells: generates an electric current directly proportional to the power of the light. to check differences between reference and sample tubes 4. Fan: the crankcase vapor are drawn by an electric extractor fan 5. Selector: to rotate and take sample from different units. 6. Mirror, lamp and lenses: to supply and reflect equal light to the reference and measuring tubes. (Warton, 1995) Diesel engine Starting system: There are different methods to start the diesel engine 1- manual handle or pulling wire mechanism 2-electric starter motor and battery (same as emergency generator and lifeboat engine) 3- starting air motor (same as diesel generator) 4- staring air system (same as main engine) (IMCO, 2016) Class activity: Auxiliary Diesel Engine Starting System(4-Stroke starting air system) TASK10: Study the diagram below shows the auxiliary diesel engine staring air system. This system is used to start a medium speed diesel engine, same as the diesel generator onboard the vessel. Discuss, how the engine is getting started including the complete operations and functions of the components of the system. This system is used to start a low speed diesel engine, same as the main engine onboard the vessel.
