Study Notes
Marine Power Plant (DMARPOWER)
- Semester-1, 2024-2025
- Prepared by Chief Eng. Hamid Reza Soltani
- Course offered at International Maritime College Oman
Lesson 21: Mooring Winch and Anchor Windlass (Deck Officer)
- Focuses on the operation and maintenance of mooring winches and anchor windlasses
- Key objective is to discuss the operation and maintenance of the winches and windlasses to ensure safe vessel operation in port.
Objectives
- Students will be able to discuss the operation of mooring winches and anchor windlasses.
- Students will be able to take the correct action and perform maintenance related to the safe operation of a mooring and windlass.
Important Points for Ship's Mooring Equipment Maintenance
- Proper operation of mooring equipment is crucial for safe vessel operation in port.
- (Singh, 2019)
Components of a Mooring System
- Warping head
- Drum
- Bollards
- Eyes to connect stoppers
- Guide roller
- Center lead
- Leadway
- Head line
- Forward spring
- (Korlaske, n.d.)
Components of an Anchor Windlass
- Chain stopper
- Anchor chain
- Hawse pipe
- Riding power
- Gear
- Drum (storage)
- Dog clutch
- Shaft
- Clutch lever
- Brake for winch
- Drum (wrapping)
- (Menon, 2020)
Brake Lining
- Maintenance is critical for proper windlass and mooring operation.
- (Dellner Bubenzer, n.d.)
Checks Prior Mooring
- Check for physical damage to the mooring mechanism
- Check controls and linkages
- Ensure levers are well-oiled and greased
- Check levers for smooth operation
- Inspect brake drums and linings for dryness and cleanliness
- Inspect gear hydraulic oil.
- (Singh, 2019) ; (Menon, 2020)
Mooring Prevention Check and Maintenance
- Walkway should be clean and free of obstructions and oil
- Inspect gratings and brackets for corrosion and rust.
- Steel wire mooring ropes should be greased and lubricated
- Check grease nipples for rust and salt.
- Regular maintenance and painting.
- Inspect drums and check for signs of corrosion or wear.
- (Singh, 2019); (Menon, 2020)
Important Check on Brake Lining
- Check the brake linings for wear and tear; replace if necessary
- Check for oil (very difficult to remove, need to replace the lining.)
- Check and clean any heavy rust.
- Remove moisture; apply the brake smoothly while running.
- (Singh, 2019)
Driven Methods and Windlass Important Parts
- Electrical motors and hydraulic motor and pump
- Main shaft
- Driving shaft (connect to motor)
- Gear and pinion
- Inspection cover
- Drums
- Brake
- Coupling
- Clutch
- Chain wheel
- Speed control valves block.
- (Menon, 2020)
Safety Important Points while Operating Anchor Windlass
- Put the mooring winch brake "on" and the clutch in disengage position before operation
- Drop and stop the anchor in every ½ shackle
- In rough weather, loosen the anchor chain tension while heaving up using engines to avoid excessive load on the windlass
- (Bhanawat, 2021); (Menon, 2020)
- Grease and lubricate the bearings weekly
- Inspect the condition of the brake lining monthly.
- Inspect piping and valves
- Nevet leave a winch in gear with the winch band brake "on".
- (Bhanawat, 2021)
Immediate Action in Case of Brake Lining Damage
- Informing the master
- Planning to replace the defective brake lining
- Order for supply of new brake lining
- Check the other fore and aft windlasses
- Secure the aft port windlass with extra lashing instead of brake
- Measure the size of the brake lining and the bolts/nuts.
- (Bhanawat, 2021)
Important Points During Brake Lining Replacement
- Secure the chain and anchor with extra lashings
- Carry out the job in calm waters.
- Ensure all connecting pins move smoothly
- Clean and grease the pins.
- Mark the position of the brake screw-down lever and brake bands
- Check the condition of the supporting plate surface.
- (Bhanawat, 2021)
