Safety Important Points while Operating Anchor Windlass
- Put the mooring winch brake "on" and the clutch in disengage position before operation
- Drop and stop the anchor in every ½ shackle
- In rough weather, loosen the anchor chain tension while heaving up using engines to avoid excessive load on the windlass

- Grease and lubricate the bearings weekly
- Inspect the condition of the brake lining monthly.
- Inspect piping and valves
- Nevet leave a winch in gear with the winch band brake "on".

- Informing the master
- Planning to replace the defective brake lining
- Order for supply of new brake lining
- Check the other fore and aft windlasses
- Secure the aft port windlass with extra lashing instead of brake
- Measure the size of the brake lining and the bolts/nuts.

- Secure the chain and anchor with extra lashings
- Carry out the job in calm waters.
- Ensure all connecting pins move smoothly
- Clean and grease the pins.
- Mark the position of the brake screw-down lever and brake bands
- Check the condition of the supporting plate surface.
