VILLOJAN Propaganda Movement and the Illustrado Class VOCABULARY PROPAGANDA - the spreading of ideas, information, for the purpose of helping an institution, a cause, or a person. MOVEMENT - the act or process of moving. especially change of place or position or posture. ILLUSTRADO – means “learned” Filipino educated class during the Spanish colonial period. Propaganda Movement The Propaganda Movement was a peaceful campaign for reforms led by renowned Filipino Ilustrados such as Jose Rizal, Marcelo del Pilar, Mariano Ponce, Graciano Lopez Jaena, and other Filipinos. GARROTE The victim's neck is placed in the collar, and the collar is slowly tightened by a screw until asphyxiation Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) A journalist, orator, reformist and national hero who is well known for his newspaper, La Solidaridad (editor) Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) Born on December 29, 1856 in Jaro, Iloilo. He was educated at the seminary of Jaro. Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) At a very young age, he wrote a satirical piece of entitled Fray Botod (Big-Bellied Friar) which depicted the abuses of the friars. At the age of 18, he wrote this piece criticizing the corrupt and oppressive behavior of Spanish friars. Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) Fray Botod serves as a reminder that not all the priest or other religious people has good intentions, some of them just uses their religion to abuse and take advantage of people. Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) He went to Spain to study Medicine in 1880. He did not finish his studies, however, and turned to journalism and politics instead. Graciano Lopez Jaena (Diego Laura) He became the first editor of La Solidaridad in 1889 when it was established in Barcelona. He died of tuberculosis on January 20, 1896 in Barcelona. Marcelo H. Del Pilar (Plaridel, Piping Dilat, Dolores Manapat) Lawyer and journalist from Bulacan. In 1882, he helped established the Diariong Tagalog. Marcelo H. Del Pilar (Plaridel, Piping Dilat, Dolores Manapat) Diariong Tagalog is the first bilingual newspaper, he edited the Tagalog section. Marcelo H. Del Pilar (Plaridel, Piping Dilat, Dolores Manapat) He released DASALAN AT TOCSOHAN (Prayers and Mockeries) – a manual of anti- clerical commentary in the format of novena. OTHER TERMS FOR LAMPOON Spoof Comic Relief Satire Parody ELEMENTS OF LAMPOON 1. a composition that imitates or misrepresents someone's style, usually in a humorous way 2. a light, good-humored satire 3. socio-political commentary with satire EXAMPLE OF LAMPOON Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (Dimasalang & Laong Laan) He is considered the national hero, writer, propagandist, doctor (ophthalmologist ) Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (Dimasalang & Laong Laan) Was born to a wealthy family on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna. He was educated by the Jesuits at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila and eventually enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas. Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (Dimasalang & Laong Laan) In 1882, without the knowledge of his parents, he sailed for Spain where he continued and finished his medical studies. Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (Dimasalang & Laong Laan) He organized a society exclusively for Filipinos on July 3, 1892. Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (Dimasalang & Laong Laan) Executed by firing squad of the Spaniards at the aged of 35 on December 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan (Luneta), Manila. Mi ultimo adios, 1896 LA SOLIDARIDAD Established in February 15,1889 and ceased publication in November 15, 1895, the bimonthly newspaper “La Solidaridad” or “Sol” was the official mouthpiece of the Propaganda Movement, the voice of the Filipinos in Spain. LA SOLIDARIDAD It was organized in Barcelona with Graciano Lopez Jaena as its first editor followed by Marcelo H. del Pilar when the publication moved to Madrid. LA SOLIDARIDAD Del Pilar and Mariano Ponce were the moving force behind the newspaper as they struggled to keep the publication going. Copies of the newspaper were also smuggled to the Philippines through Hong Kong by Jose Maria Basa. In 1895, the La Solidaridad was forced to close up because of insufficiency of funds. DEL PILAR – PLARIDEL, PIPING DILAT, DOLORES MANAPAT JAENA- DIEGO LAURA Propaganda Movement Unfortunately, it failed to attain essential rights and privileges for the Filipinos such as freedom of speech, the press, and association and representation to the Cortes (the highest lawmaking body in Spain) because of the turbulent politics in Spain, the influence of the friar orders, the insufficiency of funds to sustain the movement and internal disputes among Filipino leaders. Propaganda Movement Legacy The emergence of a Filipino national consciousness was the most important legacy of the Propaganda Movement. END
