Wee BUSIN k2 EN G L ESS ISH CO & Accuracy of answer - 3 RRES Organization -1 POND Grammar and Mechanics- 1 CE EN Shall el Ga lope- Billon Instr es, M uctor AT I TODAY’S LESSON: a. Extracting technical information from technical materials b. Documenting Sources Using Citations, Footnotes and End notes Why is there a need to extract technical information? Technical materials such as research papers, manuals, technical reports, or engineering documents are dense with specialized information. This process involves identifying relevant details, summarizing key points, and interpreting complex concepts accurately. Key Steps in Extracting Technical Information 1. Identify the Purpose of the Document 2. Skim for Structure and Key Sections 3. Highlight Key Terms and Concepts 4. Focus on Data, Formulas, and Results 5. Paraphrase Complex Information 6. Create Summaries or Annotations What is summarizing? Summary is a brief, clear statement giving the most important facts about something. Summarizing is a technique used to retain important information from a technical text as it helps an individual learn to determine essential ideas and consolidate important details that support them. It also allows to take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main points for more concise understanding. CATEGORIES OF SUMMARIES Informative Summary accurately conveys the information contained in a text or in other type of resource. It should be objective. Thus, informative summaries are recommended for scientific, non-fictional works or to present objective reports of factual content. The main types of informative summaries are: outlines, abstracts, and synopses. TYPES OF INFORMATIVE SUMMARIES 1. OUTLINES - present the plan or the “skeleton” of a written material. It also shows the order and the relation between the parts of the written material. 2. ABSTRACTS - present the major point of long piece of text or an article. Abstracts help readers to decide whether or not they want to. 3. SYNOPSIS - is a brief overview of an article, story, book, film, or other works. A synopsis is a concise, chronological description of a historical event, news event, historical event or other experiences as they DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY A descriptive summary should portray, in an objective way, the texts structure and main themes. Descriptive summaries often play the role of reviews for fictional or literary works: books, movies, video clips, articles, essays etc. The descriptive summary can include statements about sense and EVALUATIVE SUMMARY It gives comment on the material’s accuracy, completeness, plus the writer’s judgments on its accuracy, completeness and usefulness. It includes the material in the informative summary plus an assessment of the original. The writer should look over the work very carefully, noting the opening and the closing paragraphs, the major concern of HOW WELL DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE TOPIC? Read the following passage about a simple gear system and answer the questions. Gears are essential components in mechanical systems. A gear system involves two or more gears that mesh together to transmit power. The size of the gears and the number of teeth on each gear play a significant role in how the system works. Gear Ratio: The gear ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the driven gear by the number of teeth on the driving gear. For example, if the driving gear has 10 teeth and the driven gear has 20 teeth, the gear ratio is 20:10 or 2:1. This Types of Gears Spur Gears: The most common type, used to transfer motion between parallel shafts. They have straight teeth and are easy to manufacture. Bevel Gears: These are used to transfer motion between shafts at an angle, typically 90 degrees. They have angled teeth that allow them to mesh at different angles. Worm Gears: These consist of a screw (the worm) that meshes with a gear. They are useful when large gear reductions are needed, often in machines that require precise movements. Applications of Gears: Gears are used in many machines, including bicycles, cars, and clocks. In a bicycle, different gears allow you to adjust the amount of effort needed to pedal. In cars, gears in the transmission allow the engine to operate efficiently at different speeds. QUESTIONS: 1. Describe the primary function of spur gears. 2. Explain one application of gears in everyday machines. 3. In a gear system with a 4:1 gear ratio, what does this ratio tell you about the speed of the driven gear compared to the driving gear? 4. Summarize the salient points of the text. WHY DO WE DOCUMENT SOURCES? To avoid plagiarism To make your paper more scholarly To help your target audience identify your original source CITATION STYLES The type of citation style you will use depends on the class/field you are writing for because different disciplines use different styles. Types of Citations 1. In-text citation 2. Reference citation TYPES OF IN-TEXT CITATIONS NARRATIVE CITATION Billones (2020) stated that the author’s name citing sources is fun. It is incorporated could also be perplexing into the text as PARENTHETICAL at times especially for part of the CITATION students who are not adept sentence and the in this (David, 2019). year follows in the author’s name parentheses and publication date appear in parentheses. WHAT’S THIS? Billones (2020) has pointed out that plagiarism is a serious issue for universities around the world. NARRATIVE Billones states that CITATION “plagiarism is becoming increasingly widespread especially with the advent of Citing Multiple Authors AUTHORS IN-TEXT CITATIONS SUBSEQUENT 1 (Smith, 2018) (Smith, 2018) 2 (Smith & Taylor, 2018) (Smith & Taylor, 2018) 3+ (Smith et al., 2018) (Smith et al., 2018) Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhD4xaGAcRs REFERENCE CITATION Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of the work. Source where you authors or organization publication date title can retrieve the work. Smith, John B. Cruz, Dan F. Lopez Year: 2001 FOOTNOTES & ENDNOTES WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Footnotes appear at the bottom of the same page, while endnotes are found at the end of the paper. (Source: https://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/help/footnotes.htm) Instead of the in-text parenthetical citation used by APA, endnotes and footnotes are indicated at the end of a word or sentence by the use of small superscript numerals.  If you use more than one notation within a page or paper, place the numerals in order (1 , 2 , 3 ) that corresponds consecutively with the respective footnotes or endnotes.  In APA format, either footnotes or endnotes are acceptable. APA requires the first line of every note to be indented one half inch, just like the first line of a paragraph.
