DEFINITIONS How does the law define Drugs ! & what about Cosmetics? How does the law define a drug? The FD&C Act defines drugs, in part, by their intended use, as "articles intended for use in the Diagnosis, Cure, Mitigation, Treatment, or Prevention of disease" and "articles (other than food) intended to Affect the Structure or any Function of the body of Man or other Animals" [FD&C Act, sec. 201(g)(1)]. The Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) defines cosmetics as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance.“ THEY ARE NOT DRUGS PART I: Natural Products In Drug Discovery & Development “Almighty ALLAH gifted us with Brain & Nature” Let us use of both to discover new useful drug entities. What is a DRUG? A drug is any substance [other than food] presented for treating, curing or preventing disease in humans, animals or plants. It may also be used for medical diagnosis, restoring, correcting, or modifying physiological functions. The word “DRUG” imposes an action-effect context where the properties of a substance are described. For example when a drug is defined as an analgesic, it means that it is used to treat pain. So, a drug may be described as having analgesic, vasodepressor, antibacterial, hypnotic …….…etc properties. It is worth to mention that by the well of ALLAH the increase in human life expectancy, is almost due to drugs [discoverers and prescribers]. Six major sources of Drugs: ❖ Plant sources. ❖ Animal sources. ❖ Mineral/ Earth sources. ❖ Microbiological sources. ❖ Semi synthetic & Synthetic sources. ❖ Recombinant DNA technology.
