Colors, Markings, and Breeds Common Equine Terms Foal- newborn Two Year Old- 24-36 Filly- young female months of age Mare- adult female Colt- young male Stallion- adult male Gelding- castrated male Weanling- 5-12 months of age Yearling- 12-24 months of age Equine Colors and Markings Points- term used to describe the horses coat {points include: mane, tail, ear rims, and lower limbs} Black- All black in color (may have some white markings but must have black points) Bay- Brown with black points Buckskin- Golden tone with black points Chestnut/Sorrel- Brown with shades of red (no black points) Equine Colors and Markings cont. Dun- Shades of darker yellow (no black points) Palomino- Yellow/gold with light points White- All white (no markings)- pink skin Grey- Whitish gray (gets lighter with age)- black skin Roan- Mixture of coat colors Colors Sorrel or Chestnut Similar color Stock type horses (QH, Paint, App) are known a sorrel.
