# Vineyard and vines ## Italy: a great wine producer - According to the world estimate of OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), in 2015 Italy has strengthened its production with 47.6 million hectolitres of wine, out of a world production of 276 million hectolitres – 165 million in Europe and 116 million in the rest of the world. Thus, Italy has returned to the first position in the world wine production. - In every Italian region you can find about 1 million vineyards under cultivation; this gives an idea of how popular Italian wine is. In some places, vines are trained along low supports, while in others they climb up in the shape of slim trees. - A classification of vines is done according to specific parameters. - Grape growers recognise the magic when grapes and soil come together in perfect conditions. There are classic compatibilities of soil type and grape varietal. ## Where should a vineyard be planted? - A vineyard must be positioned: - in full sunlight, because in the shade vines produce large leaves but very few grapes. Even semi-shade conditions make unproductive vines; - in a well-drained soil - the water balance is considered to be the most important factor in the choice of soil for a grapevine; - in a site well protected from frost; - in an open air site with a breeze blowing in spring and summer, which is the growing period. ## Vocabulary - To train - **far arrampicare** - Shade - **ombra** - Vineyard on a valley floor (Trentino) _Image: Two photographs.
