**THE FILIPINO SENSE OF SELF** **THE FILIPINO ROOTS\ \ **The ethnically diverse people of the Philippines collectively are called Filipinos. The ancestors of the vast majority of the population were of Malay descent and came from the Southeast Asian mainland as well as from what is now Indonesia. Contemporary Filipino society consists of nearly 100 culturally and linguistically distinct ethnic groups. Of these, the largest are the Tagalog of Luzon and the Cebuano of the Visayan Islands, each of which constitutes about one-fifth of the country's total population. Other prominent groups include the Ilocano of northern Luzon and the Hiligaynon (Ilongo) of the Visayan islands of Panay and Negros, comprising roughly one-tenth of the population each. The Waray-Waray of the islands of Samar and Leyte in the Visayas and the Bicol (Bikol) of the Bicol Peninsula together account for another one-tenth. Filipino mestizos and the Kapampangans (Pampango) of south-central Luzon each make up small proportions of the population. **FILIPINO PSYCHOLOGY**\ \ Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino psychology)refers to the psychology born out of the experience, thought, and orientation of the Filipinos, based on the full use of Filipino culture and language. **PSYCHIC STRUCTURE**\ \ Psychic structure defines the dominant organization of an individual\'s mind, manner of establishing relationships, and way of dealing with conflicts. The structure must consequently be seen as a whole. It must also be seen as fundamental, registering its influence at a level deeper than what is apparent in the individual\'s personality, character, and manner.\ \ **THE FILIPINO PSYCHIC STRUCTURE**\ \ It is a complex and multifaceted concept that reflects the unique blend of indigenous beliefs, Western influences, and personal experiences within Filipino culture. This structure goes beyond the traditional Western understanding of the mind as solely a product of the brain, embracing a transpersonal worldview where the individual is interconnected with a larger, shared consciousness.\ \ \ **THE TRANSPERSONAL MIND AND THE SPIRIT WORLD** The Filipino worldview is transpersonal, recognizing a spirit world that influences human experiences and nature. Rooted in animism, Filipinos respect nature and its beauty, acknowledging spirits in forms like duwende, engkanto, and kapre. This belief influences how Filipinos perceive and explain psychic phenomena, such as sapi, which contrasts with Western psychology\'s interpretation. **THE IMPORTANCE OF KAPWA AND COLLECTIVE IDENTITY** A central concept in Filipino psychology is **kapwa**, which translates to \"shared identity. Kapwa emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals within a community, recognizing that the self is defined through relationships with others. This collectivistic approach contrasts with Western individualism, which prioritizes individual autonomy and self-reliance. This core belief emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals, viewing others as extensions of oneself.\ \ **Foundation of Kapwa:** Kapwa creates a culture where relationships are valued highly by fostering empathy, compassion, and understanding.\ \ **Creating Connections:**\ Through festivities and common experiences, Filipinos deliberately close gaps across demographics and cultivate a strong sense of community.\ \ **Bayanihan Spirit:** This group endeavor exemplifies kapwa by highlighting the importance of supporting one another and cooperating to achieve shared objectives.\ \ **Daily Life Manifestations:** From cordial greetings to the idea of utang na loob (debt of appreciation) and generous hospitality, kapwa is visible in day-to-day encounters. **Global Impact:** By fostering lively communities that place a high value on unity and support, Filipinos spread this relational ethos throughout the world. **\ Mental Health:** Kapwa emphasizes the value of relationships for mental health by fostering social cohesiveness and emotional support. **THE ROLE OF SPIRITUALITY IN EVERYDAY LIFE** Filipino spirituality is deeply ingrained in everyday life, influencing values, beliefs, and practices. It emphasizes ethical conduct and social responsibility, with traditional healers providing healing and spiritual guidance. Spirituality provides comfort, guidance, and coping mechanisms for Filipinos, especially in mental health. It offers a sense of purpose and connection during difficult times, helping Filipinos navigate life\'s challenges and fostering hope and resilience. **THE INFLUENCE OF WESTERN PSYCHOLOGY AND CATHOLICISM\ \ **Filipino psychology is deeply rooted in indigenous beliefs, but Western influences have significantly influenced Filipino families, values, relationships, and daily lives. The arrival of Christianity during the Spanish colonial period introduced new concepts and perspectives, particularly in the adoption of Western theories to analyze Filipino behavior. Catholicism, the dominant religion in the Philippines, has profoundly impacted Filipino values, spirituality, social identity, cultural values, and mental health support. **THE FILIPINO SOCIAL LIFE: THE FILIPINO AS MERRY-MAKERS**\ \ A glimpse into the vibrant and joyous spirit of the Filipino people **The Essence of Filipino Social Life** Known for their warmth, hospitality, and communal values.
