Motivation ◼ Time for psych class twister, I will try to make it easier than what the Naval Academy does to its students… ◼ What shape is Maslow’s -Naval Academy Plebes climb the greased up Herndon Monument Hierarchy of needs in? ◼ I need 6 volunteers. ◼ 3 big strong folks ◼ 2 strong but slightly smaller folks ◼ 1 smaller person Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs *Lets go around, what was your #1 motivation, where would it go on the chart? *How would Maslow view poverty and crime? Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs ◼ Our Basic Motives, the foundation of the pyramid are: ◼ Hunger -And no, your cell ◼ Sleep phone is not a basic need, no matter how much ◼ Pain you whine about it when I take it away in class. ◼ Hot/Cold Food as a need… ◼ Food is one of our profound needs ◼ *So what the heck is obesity then? ◼ Is it the far-end of us trying to achieve an instinctual need? ◼ Schachter (1971) determined that while there is certainly a biological component to overeating, generally obese folks eat because of external cues while, normal people eat because of internal cues ◼ What are external cues, what are internal cues? External cues-deals with how you are feeling and what stimuli you are experiencing in the environment Internal cues-increases in heart rate or respiration or biologically driven Moving up the Pyramid ◼ *If we have our most basic needs taken care of (levels 1 & 2), where are we then? ◼ Social Motives – ◼ Need for Achievement ◼ Fear of Failure ◼ Fear of Success ◼ Need of Belongingness Need for Achievement ◼ The Achievement goal – ◼ The desire to set challenging goals and to persist in trying to reach those goals despite obstacles, frustrations, and setbacks ◼ Our need for achievement leads to our natural enjoyment of competition ◼ It also helps following through on tasks being persistent Fear of Failure ◼ While some are motivated to achieve others are motivated simply not to fail ◼ This leads them to quit activities before they get too challenging ◼ It also leads to much easier goals being set, the person does not challenge themselves. ◼ High achievers tend to take moderate risks, while subjects who have a high fear of failure tend to take very low risk actions, or incredibly high risk actions where failure is almost guaranteed (Blame failure on task) -Don’t be afraid to fail! *Guess what attempt Henry Ford was on when he ◼ These actions lead to negative self started the Ford Motor Company? image over time Technically 4, he was on #3 but it was going belly up and had to be saved by ◼ *Which system do we use in school, an investment by the Dodge Brothers… why do you think so? (don’t want to fail) Fear of Success ◼ Matina Horner (female psychologist) -→ did a test on male and female students in 1970, 72 … ◼ “After the midterm John/Jane is #1 in their med-school class”, what happens next? ◼ 90% of men said he continues to succeed, while 65% of women had the female failing!! ◼ -She found that women fear the negative consequences of succeeding in male domains ◼ Some people are raised with the social conception that succeeding in all but a few careers is odd and unlikely ◼ They don’t believe success is deserved or can’t handle the success ◼ *Would we see the same result today? Need of Belongingness ◼ This can be the need for affiliation, which is a desire to maintain social relationships ◼ It can also be a need for intimacy, which is a relationship based on very open communication -The original outfit every college girl has worn for the last 5 years, Ugg ◼ This need for social belonging often Boots, Yoga Pants, and North Face leads to conformity…this is Jacket, slight change recently with especially apparent in both high the advent of rain boots… school and college. ◼ *What is the standard college girl outfit?
