Helpful Hints Introduction Fingerspelling is an essential part of sign language that involves spelling out words with hand movements. There are “rules” for both expressive and receptive fingerspelling that make it more fluid to produce and easier to read. When to Fingerspell 1. People’s Names Fingerspell names to identify individuals. 2. Names of Places Use fingerspelling to indicate names of specific locations. 3. Titles Titles of books, movies, restaurants, and stores can be fingerspelled. 4. Brands and Products Fingerspell brand names and product names for clarity. 5. Unknown Signs If you don’t know a sign, fingerspell the word. 6. Emphasis Fingerspelling can be used for emphasis. Expressive Rules 1. Mouth the Word Mouth the whole word, NOT individual letters. 2. Hand Placement Keep your hand just below your chin and over to your shoulder. 3. Elbow Position Keep your elbow down and close to your body, with your arm relaxed. 4. Avoid Bouncing DO NOT BOUNCE YOUR HAND/LETTERS. 5. Do Not Move Horizontally Avoid moving your hand horizontally while fingerspelling. 6. Avoid Looking at Hand Do not look at your hand while fingerspelling.
