Online MBA Semester I Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management Course Code - (OMBA-103) Unit 1: Lesson 3: Personality (Part: 1) PART 1: LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the session you will know: 1. The meaning of personality 2. The significance of the study of personality to OB 3. Personality traits of significance at the workplace PERSONALITY IDENTIFIED • Personality refers to the unique and relatively stable patterns of behaviour, thoughts, and emotions shown by individuals. • It is the sum total of a person’s physiological or biological and psychological attributes. • The word is derived from the Greek word ‘persona’ meaning a mask worn by Greek theatre artists. • Personality is reflected in our interactions with others. Why is the study of personality important to the understanding of workplace behavior? 1. Important in predicting both productive n counterproductive work behaviors/performance. Has a role to play in workplace adjustment. 2. Important while recruiting people. Personality-organization fit is crucial. FORMATION OF PERSONALITY Three factors determine the formation of personality: 1. Heredity 2. Environment 3. Situation (non normative events) PERSONALITY TRAITS OF SIGNIFICANCE AT THE WORKPLACE Trait is a characteristic of an individual that is seen as consistent across time and situations. THE BIG FIVE MODEL Openness to experience (the opposite of narrow-mindedness): Are you curious, intelligent, imaginative, independent? Conscientiousness (the opposite of unreliable): Responsible, prudent (sensible n careful), self-control, persistent, planful, achievement oriented? Extroversion (Introversion is the opposite): Sociable, assertive, talkative, ambitious, energetic? Agreeableness (the opposite is un-cooperativeness): Good natured, cooperative, trusting, likeable, friendly? Neuroticism (emotional stability is the opposite): Secure, calm, low anxiety, low emotionality? Are you prone to negative emotions? Barrick & Mount (1991)--- Conscientiousness is related to success in all aspects of work in all occupations. Conscientiousness is a combo of: Achievement Dependability Hard work, persistence, n desire to do good work. Being disciplined, well organized, respectful of laws n rules, honest, accepting authority Better predictor of/related to effort. Better predictor of reliability. Personality is a better predictor of performance when employees have a lot of control (autonomy) in their job. The job, if structured, manifests personality to a lesser degree. WHAT PREDICTS WORK PERFORMANCE Work performance Conscientious ness General mental ability (GMA) Extroversion n Agreeableness are important in jobs requiring a high degree of interpersonal work. The Big Five predict work performance beyond general intelligence (‘g’) Personality is related to motivational aspects of work (what a person WILL do) and ‘g’ is related to technical aspects of work (what a person CAN do) Measuring Personality with Self-Report Questionnaires Can you fake it? Does faking matter? • The employer can verify from other sources or embed a lie scale. • Some faking is natural. We all manage impressions n present ourselves in specific (favorable) ways in different situations. Assessment through: DISC Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): A projective technique OTHER TRAITS OF SIGNIFICANCE TO THE WORKPLACE • Self Esteem • Self Monitoring • Locus of Control • Type A and Type B personalities THE DARK TRIAD 1. Machiavellianism 2. Narcissism 3. Psychopathy INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES “All men in some respects are like: All other men. Some other men No other man.” Your uniqueness is your personality
