## The World of Life ### 13.1 Classification of Organisms It is believed that life originated on Earth about 3.6 billion years ago. It is accepted that life originated as unicellular organisms and thereafter complex multicellular organisms were evolved gradually. Today about 8.7 million species are living on Earth. There is a great diversity among these organisms. Once these organisms are grouped, it is easy to study them and to use them for different purposes. In figure 13.1 fifteen species of organisms are given. Let’s do activity 13.1 to group these organisms. #### Activity 13.1 - Identify the species of organisms in Fig. 13.1 - Group the organisms using appropriate criteria - Compare your grouping with other students in the class ### Figure 13.1 - Different species of organisms The image shows 15 different species of organisms. These include: an owl, a zebra, a goldfish, a frog, a lizard, a cardinal, a whale, a turtle, a snake, a plant, an alligator, a cat, a patch of grass, and a butterfly.
