PEST AWARENESS TRAINING PRESENTER : LINDÉ ERASMUS WHY DO WE DO PEST CONTROL? Health and Safety Pests carry and spread diseases that can contaminate food products. Protection of Goods Pests can cause significant damage to raw materials, packaging, and finished products. Maintenance of Equipment and Facilities Pests can cause structural damage to the facility and its equipment. E.g., rodents may gnaw on wires and insulation, leading to electrical hazards and machinery breakdowns. Compliance with Regulations Pest contaminated food does not comply with food safety regulations. Effective pest control is necessary to comply with local, national, and international food safety standards Loss of Business A facility with a pest problem can suffer serious reputational damage, which can result in a loss of customer trust and a decline in sales. WHY DO YOU NEED TRAINING? …BECAUSE WE NEED YOUR HELP! …TRAINING IS REQUIRED BECAUSE… We need to work TOGETHER towards a pest free environment. Pest Elite is here to assist in helping you monitor pest activity and advise you on possible pest issues, BUT PEST CONTROL is the responsibility of EVERYONE! HOW CAN YOU HELP? You are practising pest control every day. You just don’t realise it! Here are ways in which you practice PEST CONTROL every day… 1) CLEANING! Good housekeeping is vital to deny pests food, water and harbourage. 2) KEEPING ENTRY POINTS CLOSED! Do not allow pests easy access into the premises. OPEN LOADING DOORS ALLOWING EASY ACCESS FOR RODENTS, INSECT AND BIRDS. 3) GOOD STACKING PRACTISES! Golden Rule Stacks at least 50cm away from walls to allow access for inspections & treatment, as well as for cleaning. Ensure regular stock rotation. RAT NEST IN BOX – POOR STOCK 4) INSPECTING GOODS AND PACKAGING UPON RECEIVING! Checks goods as they arrive as this can result in the discovery of pest activity before they can become established in your facility. 5) REPORTING SIGNS OF PEST ACTIVITY! Report pest activity to your on-site Pest Control Representative On-site Pest Control Representative will complete the sighting log & inform Pest Elite REPORTING & DOCUMENTATION REPORTING DOCUMENTATION ON-SITE PEST CONTROL REPRESENTATIVE: SIGHTING LOG SUPERVISOR QUALITY MANAGER FOOD SAFETY FOOD SAFETY PROGRAM EXCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILTY STORAGE PRACTICES PEST ELITE COMMUNICATION SANITATION PEST CONTROL THEN AND NOW The pest control industry is obligated to limit the use of chemicals, as we try to be ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS. The use of chemicals should be the LAST RESORT. When a pest is sited, the following should take place BEFORE contacting the pest control company : Discover the ROOT CAUSE Where/How did the Is there proper Inspect the area – is pest manage to stacking practices it clean? gain entry? in place? SOLVE the root cause Close off entry Rectify stacking Clean the area OR points OR practices If the problem persists, please contact PEST ELITE - your pest control service Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a comprehensive approach to pest control that emphasizes the use of a combination of techniques to manage pest populations effectively while minimizing the use of chemical pesticides. IPM simply means: Do not attract pests Keep them out Get rid of them, eradicate with the safest, most effective methods. WHAT IS A PEST? Anything that competes with humans, domestic animals, desirable plants for food or water Injures humans, animals, desirable plants, structures, or possessions Spreads disease to humans, domestic animals, wildlife, or desirable plants, Annoys humans or domestic animals. A PEST HAS 2 MAIN CHARACTERISTICS... 1. It REPRODUCES rapidly 2. It causes DAMAGE rodents MICE.. 1 MOUSE….. ….. Can have 5-7 babies in a litter… Every 6 ….. Weeks! … 8 x per year…. ….. 48 x babies in ONE YEAR…. AND THREE MICE... ….. +/- 150 x babies in ONE YEAR AND WHAT ABOUT RATS? 1 Rat 6-12 young at 1 time 24-84 (4-7 x per annum) ….. up to 84 babies per year! RODENTS - HABITAT Burrows Drains Waste Disposal Areas Loading Docks and Receiving Areas Plant foliage (i.e. ivy or palm trees) / Overgrown vegetation Built in flower boxes Wall Cavities & Structural Voids Ceilings and False Floors Unrotated stock on pallets Vehicles standing for long periods of time RODENTS CAUSE DAMAGE? Gnawing Rodents have strong incisors that grow continuously, so they gnaw on various materials to keep them worn down. Contamination Rodents can contaminate surfaces/equipment and food products with their droppings, urine, hair, and saliva, making the food unsafe for consumption Spread Disease Rodents are carriers of various pathogens that can cause diseases in humans, such as Salmonella. Rodent droppings and urine can trigger allergies and asthma attacks in sensitive individuals. RODENT CONTROL Baiting: (Chemical Control) Secure, tamper-resistant bait stations with rodenticides. Trapping: (Non-Chemical Control) WHY DO WE USE MECHANICAL TRAPS? Some food safety standards prohibit the use of baits inside Non-Toxic food facilities due to the risk of product contamination. Allow us to detect and record Monitorin signs of rodent activity, g potential rodent habitat and food sources. Immediat Immediately reduces the risk e Results and rodent activity. WHY DO WE HAVE TO DO INTERNAL INSPECTIONS? Audits Audit guidelines requirements. YUM, Woolworths, AIB, etc. All traps must be inspected regularly for activity. Food Captured rodents are promptly removed, preventing the risk of contamination. Safety Dead and dying rodents can cause odors, and lead to potential health hazards. Effectivene Ensure that traps are functioning ss properly and effectively capturing rodents. Monitoring Unattended dead rodents can attract Prevent Secondary secondary pests such as flies and Pests maggots. INSPECTION EQUIPMENT To conduct a thorough inspection, you will need: Flashlig Pen ht Site Map Paintbrus Checklis h t INSPECTION PROCEDURE The mechanical traps need to be inspected on a weekly basis. 1) Use the Pest Elite site map to locate each mechanical trap. Each trap is numbered, and the location is marked with a sign board. 2) Check for signs of pest activity around the trap. 3) Open the bait station and look for captured rodents, and any damage or malfunction. Also check for any signs of activity (droppings) outside the trap. 4) If you spot a dead rodent(s), rodent activity or damaged station/trap, follow the correct reporting procedure. 5) If nothing has been caught in the snap trap, check if the snap trap inside is still in place and set. 6) We recommend using a paintbrush or any HACCP-approved brush to remove any debris from production in and around the trap. 7) Record your findings on the checklist. N.B. Avoid 8) Report your findings to your onsite Record pest control representative. Findings: writing stacking. Date of the internal inspection Rather rectify Next to each mechanical trap – indicate stacking and using the following symbols: inspect trap. = No Activity Stacking reflects A = Activity negatively in an S = Stacking Condition of trap (e.g., broken / audit. damaged) Any signs of rodent activity around Date = No Activity A = Activity S = Stacking Inspector Sign COCKROACHES IDENTIFICATION DO COCKROACHES BREED RAPIDLY? Contamination Cockroaches can contaminate surfaces/equipment and food products with their droppings, saliva, and shed skin, which contain allergens and pathogens. Spread Disease Cockroaches contaminate spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Common pathogens carried by cockroaches include Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus. Allergic Reactions: Cockroach droppings, saliva, and shed skin can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks, especially in sensitive individuals. The allergens can become airborne and spread throughout the facility. Physical Damage They may chew on materials to create nesting sites. Their presence and waste inside machinery and equipment can interfere with operations and cause malfunctions. FLYING INSECTS IDENTIFICATION HOUSE FLY FRUIT FLY BLOW FLY MOTHS A spike in the counts of various insects on an insect light trap can provide valuable insights into potential issues within the facility. Here's what an increase in each type of insect might indicate: HOUSE FLIES Sanitation Issues: Decaying organic matter, garbage, and food waste attract house flies. A spike in their numbers often indicates poor sanitation practices, such as uncleaned spills, improperly stored waste, or unclean equipment. Inefficient waste disposal methods or overflowing garbage bins. Gaps, cracks, or open doors/windows where house flies can enter the facility. BLOW FLIES There may be a source of decomposition within or near the facility. Attracted to decomposing meat, dead animals, and other decaying organic matter. Also are attracted to poorly managed waste, i.e., overflowing or improperly stored garbage.. Openings in the structure of the facility that allow blow flies to enter can be a concern. FRUIT FLIES Attracted to overripe or rotting fruits and vegetables. Can indicate that produce is not being stored or rotated properly, leading to spoilage. Attracted to fermenting liquids, i.e., spilled fruit juices, soda, or alcohol. Improper cleaning in areas where these liquids are used or stored can attract fruit flies. Breed in drains and sinks where organic matter accumulates. A spike may suggest that these areas need more thorough cleaning. MOTHS Stored Product Infestation: A spike in moth counts often indicates an infestation in stored products like grains, cereals, flour, nuts, and dried fruits. The presence of moths suggests that these products are either being stored improperly or are not being inspected regularly for signs of infestation. Moths are often found in stored grains, cereals, and other dry goods. Their presence may indicate improper storage conditions such as high humidity or inadequate sealing of containers. Night Activity: Moths are typically active at night. Their presence may indicate that facility doors are left open during nighttime hours. FLIES – How quick do they The female house fly willbreed? reproduce about 5-6 times, laying batches of about 100 eggs during each round. They usually only mate once but can produce between 350-900 eggs in their lifetime. The eggs are white and about 1.2 mm in length. Eggs hatch within 12 - 24 hours in warm weather. Under ideal conditions (warm temperatures and abundant food), the entire life cycle from egg to adult can take as little as 7 to 10 days. Adult house flies typically live for 2 to 3 weeks, though they can live up to a month under favorable conditions. FLIES CAUSE DAMAGE? Food Contamination Flies carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause illnesses, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. When they land on food or food preparation surfaces, they can cause spoilage by laying eggs or depositing saliva, feces, and regurgitated fluids. Product Loss Contaminated or spoiled products may be rejected by customers or regulatory authorities, resulting in financial losses for the facility. Food items that have been contaminated or infested by flies may need to be discarded, leading to waste and additional costs for the facility. Damage to Reputation Reports of flies in a food production facility can damage its reputation and erode consumer trust. Even if no contamination occurs, the mere presence of flies can create negative perceptions about cleanliness and food quality. Thank you for HELPING US to HELP YOU !! 1.
