Locating Main Ideas Mr. Silan LECTURE COVERAGE Location of Main Ideas Strategies in locating thesis statement and topic sentences Academic reading requires concentration and comprehension; AR differs from NAR in terms of LESSON content, style, and expectations RECAP: from readers; Critical reading is important in identifying key arguments presented by the author and analyzing concepts presented in the text. Thesis statement presents or describes the main point of a text; In academic text, the TS is usually LESSON presented in the abstract or executive RECAP: summary and/or at the last part of the introduction; The topic sentence presents or describes the main point of the paragraph. In an essay, it should be connected to the thesis statement. It can be in the middle, or last part of the paragraph. Thesis Statement Thesis Statement It is one-sentence summary that guides, controls, and unifies ideas when writing a paper. In an Academic Text, the TS is usually presented in the abstract or executive summary or found at the last part of the introduction. Tells the reader what the body paragraphs will consist of. Example: Topic: Learning to play an instrument Thesis Statement: Learning to play an instrument is time consuming, tedious, and expensive. Example: Topic: Reading Habit Thesis Statement: It is important for children to cultivate the reading habit because it broadens knowledge, enhances imagination, and improves vocabulary. A thesis statement should.. Contain a topic (main idea of what you are writing about); Contain an opinion about the topic (what your attitude is toward the topic). Topic Sentence Topic Sentence It guides, controls, and unifies ideas in a paragraph; It develops one argument of the thesis statement; It is generally the first sentence of the paragraph. Supporting Details These are pieces of information necessary to better understand the main idea. They can be facts, reasons, testimonies, statistics, and experiments that support the topic sentence.
