Chapter 2: Unpacking the Self Lesson 1: The Physical Self by: Ms. Michelle G. Estomo INTRODUCTION The physical body is the window to one’s personality. A crucial aspect of the self is one’s physical features. However, more than the physical attributes, people should also consider their physical competencies, valuation of physical worth, and perception of beauty. It is shaped by biological and environmental factors. However, it is surrounded by issues associated with health, hygiene, nutrition, and standard of beauty, among others. The development of an individual comes from two factors: Heredity Defined as the transmission of traits from parents to offspring. Gene The basic unit of heredity Genotype The specific information embedded within one’s genes; not all genotype translate to an observed physical characteristics. Phenotype The physical expression of a particular trait. The Scheme of Self Image Hierarchy by Shavelson et.al. The Scheme of Physical Self Perception’s Structure Without the tangible, responsive physical body, we could not enjoy the pleasures of the world. Taking Care of our Physical Body Staying healthy in mind and body is essential, especially in this current state of the world. Self-care occurs in three levels: physical, mental, and emotional Our good health springs from the mind, which stimulates the heart, and the heart energizes the physical body What is self-care? Self-care is any activity we actively choose to do to take care of our physical, mental and emotional well-being. It is the intentional, planned, and actual act of taking the time to attend to our basic physical, mental, and emotional needs. Physical Self-Care Three basic aspects of physical self- care: a. Good nutrition b. Sufficient amount of recovery time c. necessary exercise Get enough sleep Keep a bedtime schedule to give your body the rest it needs to recover. Eat well and eat healthy Nourish your body with healthy food and keep yourself hydrated. Exercise regularly Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to workout or to simply move your body. Mental Self-Care Two-fold process First step: Taking time to consistently break down what you are thinking and why you are thinking that, because the moment you manage to notice your thoughts, they will not have the power to direct your life without even noticing. Second Step: To cultivate those mental habits and thoughts that benefit us. Tips for improving our mental habits by Brzosko Focus your attention on the present moment. Practice gratitude. Exercise patience. Learn to accept what is already happening. Emotional Self-Care An important step in dealing with our emotional self is to recognize the validity of our emotional state. The second option tells us that we can actually detach the mental interpretation from the emotion itself. Self-care practices can look different for everyone. For some it can mean staying still while for some it can mean being active. The main idea is to engage in an activity that recharges or energizes you. Self-care is something we enjoy doing and not something we feel forced to do.
